EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT FACILITIES ASSISTANT – Band 2

Main duties of the job
  • Participates in cleaning, stocking up and other non-clinical duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the department.
  • Cleaning of equipment as per Infection Control Guidelines.
  • Maintaining stock areas, ensuring stores areas are clean, tidy and fully stocked at all times.
  • The post holder is expected to be flexible, multi tasking and have the ability to work within a team and independently without direct supervision.
  • Provide a vital supporting role to the Emergency Department carrying out tasks which include but are not limited to patient and non-patient portering, general maintenance and organisation of stores.

Additional duties may include transfer of patients within the unit and other areas of the hospital and escorting patients to other departments, and general housekeeping duties including making hot drinks for patients post procedures.

Job Summary

Participates in cleaning, stocking up and other non-clinical duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the department. Cleaning of equipment as per Infection Control Guidelines. Transfer of patients within the unit and other areas of the hospital and escorting patients to other departments. Maintaining stock areas clean, tidy and maintaining stock supplies on the unit. The post holder is expected to be flexible, multi task, and have the ability to work within a team and independently without direct supervision. The post holder will be expected to provide a vital supporting role to the Emergency Department carrying tasks which will include but not limited to patient and non-patient portering, general cleaning and housekeeping duties including making hot drinks for patients post procedures.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Communication

  1. Communicates effectively and respectfully with patients, their relatives/visitors, ward/team leaders and all members of the multi-professional team utilising both verbal and non-verbal communication methods.
  2. Answers the telephone and assists with enquiries in a polite and professional manner ensuring a positive impression of the department/organisation and self.
  3. Works as an effective member of the team and demonstrates understanding of team work in delivery of care and reporting concerns appropriately.

Clinical

  1. Maintains standards of infection prevention and control within the boundaries of your responsibility.
  2. Ensures equipment e.g. wheelchairs and trolleys are sited in designated areas, clean, maintained and available for use at any time.
  3. Participates in moving and handling patients in a manner which is safe for both the patient, colleagues and the post holder in accordance with Trust Manual Handling Policy and patient risk assessments.
  4. Performs cleaning, stocking up and other non-clinical duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the department.
  5. Ensures own practice adheres to Trust Infection Control policies and Procedures (e.g. Hand Hygiene).

Role Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates understanding of the boundaries of the Facilities Assistant role and can refuse tasks outside of scope (e.g. patient assessments).
  2. Transferring patients within the unit and escorting to other departments.
  3. Includes cleaning of equipment, maintaining a tidy environment, stocking and maintaining stock levels; liaising with clinical engineering and IT where appropriate.
  4. Develops working knowledge of Emergency Department equipment and ordering systems.
  5. Maintains high standards of working relationships with patients, staff, managers and other Trust departments.
  6. Attends yearly statutory training (e.g. Minimal Handling, Infection Control, Basic Life Support, Fire and Health and Safety).
  7. Ensures equipment is sited, cleaned, maintained and available for use; keeps department corridors and entrances clear.
  8. Participates in stock audits and ensures adequate but not excessive supplies.
  9. Supports a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness in the ward/department.
  10. Contributes to establishing and developing a quality service.
  11. Other duties as required or delegated by the Nurse in Charge.
  12. Have the ability to work within a team and independently without direct supervision. Demonstrate a positive attitude. Ability to plan, prioritise workload and manage time effectively.
