This post is an opportunity for a motivated midwife with an interest in education and teaching, with the drive to develop their skills and experience in this area. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, and will work closely with Dr Cecilia McKee, who is the current undergraduate lead for the unit. The role will include involvement in the co-ordination, organization and delivery of clinical teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students.
The role is designed to enable the individual to continue to practice clinically, with an expectation that over the year, around 50% of time will be spent on education, and 50% on clinical shifts. Commitment to the undergraduate timetable would be expected, with these fixed sessions being protected and taking priority.

The departments provide undergraduate teaching to medical students from Newcastle University in both stage 3 and stage 5 as part of their Womens Health rotations. Each rotation has 6-8 students, spending either 3 weeks or 4 weeks in the department with teaching provided in a variety of clinical settings including outpatient clinics, wards, theatres and delivery suite. The post holder would be expected to take an active role in delivering and supporting this teaching. There would be a combination of small group seminar type sessions, clinical based discussions and opportunistic bedside clinical teaching. Each new cohort of students requires an introduction session, and an induction/orientation to the delivery suite, to which the post holder would contribute. The role provides an additional point of contact for the students, in what can be a daunting placement, and a bridge between what they have learned in lectures, and day-to-day clinical work.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
