Job summary

An ecological consultancy is seeking an Ecologist to conduct surveys and prepare ecological reports. Brooks Ecological, an Origin Enterprises company, is an ecology-led consultancy with a diverse portfolio of projects, ranging from large-scale habitat restoration and management schemes to strategic urban extensions and smaller private initiatives.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Ecologist to work on a broad variety of projects.

You will play a key role in delivering ecological surveys, assessments, and mitigation strategies across a range of projects, from infrastructure and development to conservation and biodiversity enhancement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), and protected species surveys (e.g., bats, GCN, reptiles, badgers).
  • Preparing high-quality ecological reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, and mitigation plans.
  • Supporting project management tasks including client liaison and scheduling.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, planning policy, and best practice guidance.
  • Liaising with stakeholders including clients, planning authorities, and conservation bodies.
  • The ability to complete PEA’s on small to medium size green and brownfield sites independently and is confident in the use of the UK habitat classification system.
  • Able to undertake Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments on small to medium size green and brownfield sites independently using the Statutory metric.
  • Demonstrable ability to provide clear, succinct and robust technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, and protected species surveys.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and data analysis.
  • A clear understanding of relevant UK wide environmental /ecological policy and legislation.
  • A Degree in Ecology or similar
  • Membership of CIEEM or working towards it.
  • Ecological Clerks of Works (ECoW) experience
