Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) team as a Surveillance Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to support our work in improving antimicrobial use and reducing antimicrobial resistance across the Trust.

As part of the AMS team, you will play a vital role in collecting and inputting clinical data for audits and national reporting, helping us deliver our annual programme of work. You will work closely with ward teams, pharmacy, microbiology, and infection prevention colleagues to ensure accurate data collection and promote good antimicrobial stewardship practices.

This post will be an integral member of the AMS team working under the guidance of the Trust Consultant Antimicrobial Pharmacist and alongside a multidisciplinary team that includes a microbiologist, 2 advanced specialist pharmacists and a data analyst.

Support and development opportunities will be provided to build your skills in data collection, audit methodology, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and management.

Main duties of the job

To accurately collect and input clinical information for a range of antimicrobial stewardship audits. The information will be collected from clinical records, speaking with the ward nurses and using a variety of clinical electronic resources. The role supports the Antimicrobial Stewardship team’s annual programme of work to improve the usage of antimicrobials within the trust and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Visit wards and departments: communicate with healthcare professionals and the patient population, and review clinical records, in order to collect clinical information for the Antimicrobial Stewardship audit programme.
  • Support ad hoc data collection for antimicrobial stewardship teamwork, including infection outbreak response actions and response to information requests from end users.
  • Collect clinical data to support delivery of the Trust’s national antimicrobial resistance and infection work.
  • Assist in the formulation of reports for feedback purposes.
  • Input data locally, nationally and hospital-wide as required.
  • Support ward staff by encouraging good antimicrobial stewardship practices and providing informal teaching sessions.
Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in dealing with databases and data input
  • Demonstrable experience in the collection of information for the production of reports.
  • Demonstrable experience in searching for and collating information from multiple sources
  • Networking: being able to work within and outside the Trust confidently.
  • Demonstrable experience with IT, eg. Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Excel)
  • Working proven knowledge of medical terminology
  • Working within healthcare / NHS setting
  • Demonstrable experience in using clinical records
  • Demonstrable experienced with computerised Patient administration systems
  • Demonstrable experience working in clinical environment
  • Working proven knowledge of the Data protection act
  • Awareness of the National agenda for the reduction of Antimicrobial Resistance and the Start Smart then Focus toolkit.
Qualifications
  • Proven education to GCSE Grade 4 and above (C and above) in Maths and English or equivalent qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • ECDL or City and guilds/NVQ or diploma level.
Aptitude and Abilities
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
  • Ability to deal with complex and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrably experienced in basic office administration skills
