Job description

An opportunity has arisen within the lung team for a band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role at The Royal Marsden Hospital predominantly at the Sutton site, but there may be some cross-site cover needed.
The Lung CNS role oversees patients from the neo-adjuvant to palliative setting for the NHS and for private patients who are undergoing medical and radiotherapy treatment.

The post holder has a distinct level of responsibility to patients with lung cancer in providing a comprehensive specialist nursing service to the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, working within a team of advanced clinical nurses. The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists and specifically provide advanced nursing care to patients with local and advanced cancer.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the Lead Nurse and Matron.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patientwith lung cancers, acting as a resource to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.
  • To take responsibility for own evidence-based practice and implement into the body of knowledge that supports nursing practice within.
  • To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team to achieve a synchronised specialist service.
  • To provide informal and formal teaching, e.g. academic courses provided by the School of Nursing.

  • To sustain a high-quality specialist service for the patient, from diagnosis through all stages of the disease and actively provide optimum liaison and continuity of care.
  • To use advanced clinical judgement to plan, implement and evaluate care for patients throughout their cancer pathway.
  • In collaboration with the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists, to formulate and/or revise relevant policies and to regularly review this following change/implementation. To work within the procedures and policies of the Trust.
  • In conjunction with the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists, to develop assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention so that patients with complex needs are referred to the appropriate specialist/s.
Person specification
Education/Qualifications
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
  • Educated to Degree level
  • Recognised teaching/mentorship qualification
  • Post graduate qualification in oncology or other speciality
  • Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards
Experience
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology
  • Experience in at least one Oncological treatment modality (SACT, surgery or radiotherapy)
  • Knowledge and understanding of care of patients with cancer
  • Experience of working as a CNS
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
