Job overview

Posts are available in the Histopathology Department, which sees around 70,000 surgical requests per year and is implementing a fully digital reporting service.

Main duties
  • Sorting, labeling and processing patient specimens from operating theatres, wards, clinics, post mortem room, and GP surgeries.
  • Entering patient data into the Pathology computer system; assisting at specimen dissection and routine technical roles such as section cutting and tissue embedding.
  • Preparing solutions, filing and retrieving archive material, performing daily equipment maintenance and cleaning tasks.
  • Assisting with the digital scanning service.
  • Participating in maintenance of laboratory equipment, reporting faults to senior BMS staff.
  • Filing and retrieving laboratory request forms, blocks, and slides when required.
  • Basic stock control duties and appropriate action.
  • Working as part of a team in specimen reception, cut-up, main laboratory, immunohistochemistry, and digital scanning areas on rotation.
  • Using the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and other Trust IT platforms.
