Job description

We’ve got an exciting opportunity for you to join our Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) team as a Workshop Technician—and trust us, this is no ordinary workshop gig!

Why You'll Love It

You'll be the behind-the-scenes hero keeping the Tyne and Wear Metro moving. From ticket machines to gatelines, validators to car park kit—you’ll repair, maintain, and work your magic on the hardware that keeps our customers on the go.

Typical Day

Home Base: Our South Gosforth infrastructure office.

Shift Pattern: 5 days out of 7 on day shift (yes, some weekends too).

Your Mission
  • Fine-tune, fix, and maintain ticketing systems—machines, validators, gatelines, and more.
  • Mostly workshop-based, but sometimes you’ll venture out into the Metro network to support field maintainers.
  • Meet customers, collaborate with colleagues, and keep things running smoothly.
  • Bonus: You’ll get involved in exciting updates and projects to sharpen your skills and stay ahead of the game. We’ll kit you out with all the PPE, tools, and equipment you need to succeed.
About You
  • Served a recognised apprenticeship
  • Electrical/electronic BTC/ONC or equivalent
  • Tech‑savvy with distributed systems and end‑point devices
  • Able to prioritise and work independently
  • Experience with electrical installations
  • Driving licence

If you tick these boxes, we want you on our team!

More information can be found in the Supporting Documents section.
Meet the Team

You’ll join a close-knit AFC team of 16, part of the wider ICT maintenance and operations family. In the workshop, you’ll work alongside two other techs and report to the AFC Supervisor.

About Us

We care for our communities, deliver with trust and accountability, and adapt with innovation. Every journey is designed to be sustainable, inclusive, and customer‑focused because when we move forward together, we create a cleaner environment, a stronger economy, and a better future for all.

What we offer
  • This is a Sunday to Saturday job
  • You’ll work a 36‑hour week
  • Your basic salary will be £33,549.73 with generous allowances paid all year round
  • You’ll be part of a generous pension scheme (Local Government Pension Scheme)
  • 28 days annual leave per year plus bank holidays and time off for volunteering too
  • Enjoy travelling for free in Tyne and Wear with our enhanced travel benefits for you and your family
  • Free or discounted travel with Grand Central, LNER, Lumo, Northern Rail and TransPennine Express
  • You will have the opportunity to contribute to a health cash plan that will contribute (and dependants if you have them) towards dental costs, optical, and lots more
  • Access to our reward app with over 1000 plus high street discounts on groceries, holidays and days out.
  • We like to grow our own colleagues (not literally of course!), so when you’re ready for the next step in your career, we can help develop you
  • We’re keen for team members to develop, learn and gain knowledge from other organisations, projects and conferences, so the role would involve some travel both within and outside the UK.
