Responsibilities & Programme

As a Manufacturing Technician Apprentice you will work to develop a wide range of skills over a four‑year long programme. You will support the industry work cells to develop, assemble and test cutting‑edge technology, maintaining our high‑end technology that dates back through the decades. Your work will cover optical, mechanical and electrical assembly and testing, with opportunities to grow your career and develop specialist skills. You will also develop essential soft skills such as working behaviours, communication and team working.

Programme Structure
  1. Year 1 – First six months: undertake your SVQ PEO Level 2 and HNC full‑time at a further education provider; remainder of the year completed by attending the Glasgow Thales site for a first placement.
  2. Year 2 & 3 – Participate in training within production work cells on a rotational basis, obtaining a flexible range of core skills across all aspects of the manufacturing process of assembly and test. All training is recorded and verified to Diploma 7 SVQ standard and externally assessed.
  3. Year 4 – Complete full Diploma 7 Work‑Based Learning job packs to obtain the full qualification. Progression to roles such as Integration and Test Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering, Product System Testing, Inspection, Optical Testing and Environmental Testing. Full review of further education achieved, with consideration of higher‑level qualification if appropriate.

  • 5 National 5s including English, Maths and a Science subject at Grade C or above
  • Live and work in Scotland for the duration of the programme
  • Permanent right to work in the UK and a requirement for UK Security Clearance (SC)
  • Require a sole British National from birth and achievement of Security Clearance (SC) without caveats; if not yet held, must obtain prior to commencement.
Additional Information

Due to the nature of the work Thales requires all roles to be subject to security restrictions. All successful candidates must possess the permanent right to work in the UK and will be required to undergo Government security clearance at BPSS level and to obtain full Security Clearance (SC) in line with the United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) requirements before starting.
