Job description
Consultant in Gastroenterology

The closing date is 28 December 2025

We wish to appoint a new consultant to join our Gastroenterology service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). This role will complement our current team of 16 Consultants with an aim to support the general gastroenterology and specialist IBD service, but those with other specialist interests would be considered.

We provide the gastroenterology services for the whole of Gloucestershire and the Trust is made up of Gloucester Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital. There is a dedicated 16 bed Gastroenterology ward at Cheltenham General Hospital and a daily consultant presence in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for in‑patient referrals and endoscopy. Outpatient services are provided at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital, with outreach clinics held at Cirencester, Bourton‑on‑the‑Water, Winchcombe, Stroud, Tewkesbury, and Forest of Dean Community Hospitals.

Main duties of the job
  • Ensure the provision of a first‑class clinical service.
  • Provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
  • Sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
  • Undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies.
  • Support the business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division and our Trust.
  • Work within the framework of team decisions.
  • Take a whole systems approach to working with the wider health community both NHS and social services.
  • Show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.
  • Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's service plans.

This post will enable the Gastroenterology team to further develop the local service and the post‑holder will be expected to contribute to a consultant‑led service by allowing an increase in service capacity. The role will include endoscopy provision over weekends along with on‑call services and Gastroenterologist of the Day cover across both acute sites.

Job responsibilities

We expect the post‑holder to support the delivery of a robust service in order to provide high quality care to Gastroenterology patients in a timely manner: to be responsible for inpatients on a rota basis on Knightsbridge ward based in Cheltenham General Hospital, to be responsible for reviewing in‑patient referrals and providing in‑patient endoscopy service at Gloucester Royal Hospital as part of the Gastroenterologist of the Day rota, to be responsible for providing advice and input to patients with Gastroenterology problems referred by other specialties when on‑call or when attending a clinic to provide advice regarding patients with Gastroenterology problems referred by GPs and other staff (e.g. pharmacists, nurse practitioners) including via Cinapsis and Advice and Guidance as needed, to provide outpatient clinics both at acute and community sites to provide consultant‑led dedicated endoscopic lists at acute and community sites within job plan including when on‑call to review new patients to Knightsbridge ward but also to other acute wards during on‑call weekends as well as potential discharges or those causing concern to be available to review or advise regarding gastroenterology patients in ED or SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) in a timely manner when on‑call to conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of our Divisions and Trusts agreed objectives to support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff to support the delivery of the IBD service. The post‑holder will be immediately accountable to the Clinical Lead and Divisional Lead. The post‑holder will be expected to undertake appraisal and to respond to any identified development needs. The post‑holder will have a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well‑being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the posts.

The post-holder is expected to:
  • Observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  • Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  • Be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Upper and Lower GI Endoscopic experience
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General or Respiratory Medicine via CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR or European Community Rights
  • Additional degrees or diplomas relevant to the specialty
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to take a whole systems approach to Gastroenterology and Endoscopy work within the context of the hospital as a whole.
  • Involvement in teaching junior doctors and nurses.
  • Ability to appraise research critically.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects.
  • Ability to manage risk and change.
  • Ability to deal with complaints from the public.
  • Experience in Audit.
  • Working knowledge of evidence‑based practice.
  • Training endoscopic trainers course.
  • Certificate of education.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Clinical Experience
  • General training leading to CCT (or equivalent) in Gastroenterology.
  • Expertise in endoscopic procedures.
Personal Attributes
  • Attitudes to Gastroenterology compatible with the aims and objectives of the existing team and the Trust.
  • Ability to show initiative and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to work under stress.
  • Flexibility, able to adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Basic IT skills, word processing, literature searching.
  • Special interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
