V05157 - Advanced Apprentice Engineering Technical - Support Engineer

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state‑of‑the‑art vessels.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work

A Submarine, like any vehicle, requires regular inspection and maintenance - though on a far larger and more complex scale. This role involves:

  • Identifying necessary maintenance, determining required tools and spares and analysing equipment reliability and availability
  • Applying engineering and logistic principles to develop operational support solutions
  • Strong problem‑solving skills are essential to understand how systems and components function and break down into repairable parts
  • Developing and applying knowledge of Supportability Engineering and Integrated Product Support (IPS) including processes, tools, systems and techniques
  • Ensuring Submarines remain safe, effective and ready for continuous deployment and long‑term operational success

  • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).

  • Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
  • An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation.
  • At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
Requirements

GCSE in: 5 GCSE, Inc Maths, English & Science or Technical (grade A*-C or 9-4 or equivalent).

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
