Job description
Who are Midland Mencap

Midland Mencap is a charity which works and campaigns for accessible and inclusive services and a better quality of life for everyone with experience of learning disabilities and additional needs.

Volunteering with Midland Mencap is your opportunity to do something really positive, to have a great time, feel good and help us achieve our vision.

Purpose of the role?

People with a learning disability or additional needs are often isolated and excluded from mainstream leisure and social activities. We believe that EVERYONE has the right to have fun and feel safe.

Our activity groups and social events give adults with additional needs the opportunity to enjoy wellbeing and leisure activities with their friends! We are looking for volunteers to support and join in with the facilitation of this offer across Walsall!

What would I be doing?

With your friendly personality and happy attitude, we need you to be a friendly face for our citizens, chatting and helping them to get involved and have a great time.

Our weekly social night gives our citizens the chance to meet their friends and enjoy a range of games and music, or pop into town for something to eat or a game of bowling.

Our monthly disco is filled with music, laughs and good times. Whether you want to dance along or you are just happy to chat, you can help someone to have a fun night.

  • Supporting people to take part in various activities, including arts and crafts, music, quizzes, gentle sports, trips and community outings.
  • Encouraging people to feel part of the group and take part in the activities.
  • Helping to set up equipment and tidy away at the end of a session.
  • There is even scope for you to share your skills in delivering something new!
What do I need?
  • A friendly personality to ensure a happy atmosphere.
  • Accepting of people who may be different to you.
  • Happy to chat.
  • Willing to learn and act within guidelines set out by Midland Mencap.
  • Good time management skills, and reliability.
  • An enhanced DBS check will be required by all successful applicants.
When and where do you need me?

Volunteers can choose from a range of opportunities depending on your availability!

  • We run daily activities Monday – Friday between 10am – 3pm
  • Walsall Disability Hub, 17 Lichfield St, Walsall WS1 1TU
  • Our weekly social group meets on a Tuesday evening between 6pm – 7.30pm

  • Our Monthly disco is on the last Thursday of the month between 7pm – 9pm
  • Pelsall Community Centre. Station Rd, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4BQ
What’s in it for me?

As one of our valued volunteers, Midland Mencap will offer you:

  • The opportunity to make a difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities and their family carers
  • An induction and settling-in period
  • Any training and development that is needed
  • The chance to develop your skills and gain experience
  • The opportunity to meet new people and be part of a diverse team
  • Support within your role
  • Any out-of-pocket travel expenses
