Job description

The job requirements are detailed below. Where applicable the skills, qualifications and memberships required for this job have also been included.

We are seeking to employ Sports Coach Graduates for the 2026-2027 Academic Year to contribute to our sports, physical education and boarding programs. We are looking for individuals with experience as a player or early-career coach in football, hockey, netball and rugby specifically.

A graduate placement year in the sports department of Millfield School (senior) will provide an unrivalled opportunity to develop your skills in one of the UK’s leading Independent Schools for boys and girls, aged 13-18 years.

Millfield is not like other schools and never has been. Founded in 1935, Millfield’s vision is to be the world leader for the development of children. There are nearly 1300 students at the senior school (Year 9 to U6) and a further 450 students at the neighbouring Prep School. Millfield’s size brings great opportunity, and the facilities are unmatched in the UK: an Olympic‑sized swimming pool, state of the art hockey/rugby/football pitches, golf courses, indoor centres for tennis, golf, cricketand an equestrian centre; concert hall, recording studio, theatre, art gallery, hi‑tech Science block and outstanding teaching facilities; and high‑quality boarding accommodation.

We are seeking coaching graduates to be involved in all aspects of the design and delivery of a programme including planning, coaching, and contributing to the support services (athletic development, analysis, nutrition) of our talented student athletes. Coaching graduates who live in Millfield accommodation will also be expected to contribute to our boarding programme.

Coaching graduates will have the opportunity to develop some of the knowledge and skills gained from an Undergraduate or Masters degree. Successful candidates should be confident, reliable and have good interpersonal skills as well as showing a willingness to be involved in all areas of school life.

Candidates should have recently graduated from a Sports Science, Sports Coaching, or similar degree, or be due to graduate in July 2026. Applicants will have participated regularly in their sport to a good standard and ideally hold coaching qualifications in relevant activities.

The post runs for a full academic year with breaks for School holidays. Graduates with onsite accommodation will work 39 hours per week which will be divided between Sport and boarding commitments (an average of 6 hours per week on evening duties in the boarding programme and one weekend in three). You will receive £14,705.76 salary per annum (inclusive of holiday pay). You will also receive full board and lodgings (non‑monetary, to the value of £3,341.10 per annum).

Graduates not living in Millfield accommodation will not be expected to contribute towards the boarding programme and will work the full 39 hours per week in their sport department, receiving £18,538.81 per annum (inclusive of holiday pay).

There is a formal personal development programme provided as part of the placement opportunity which is overseen by the Deputy Director of Sport and many expert staff within the department. This has a value more than £2500.

The closing date for applications is 1 st February 2026.

Millfield School is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all. We are a community that celebrates diversity, supporting our pupils and employees to be brilliant as individuals.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Specific safeguarding responsibilities for this position are outlined in the job description. Offers of employment are subject to satisfactory safeguarding checks including, but not limited to, Enhanced DBS clearance and satisfactory references. All positions within the school are exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
