Job description

The Voice Quality Specialist is a hands‑on role, and you will play a crucial role in the test of Voice Quality on several key projects, both internally and supplier developed products. You will be critical to the development of quality assurance and automation tooling to provide the best in class service customers expect. You will drive and execute the most complex workstreams to deliver the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT's commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.

Working in this role you will play a critical part in the operation of the QA function within a wider team of specialist engineers. In the QA team, we advocate for quality across all the phases. You will work closely with the Requirement leads/Business stakeholders, Solution Design, Engineering, Delivery & Inlife and SRE teams to ensure we deliver the requirements into production with quality as per agreed milestone.

What you’ll be doing
  • Voice Quality Expert: Be an expert in the field of Voice Quality supporting multiple projects including CPE and Core equipment.
  • Automation Frameworks: Maintain scalable, maintainable, and reusable automation frameworks for web, mobile, and desktop applications.
  • Test Planning: Collaborate with project managers and QA leads to create test plans and define automated testing scope.
  • Test Script Development: Lead the development of automated test scripts using industry-standard automation tools and programming languages (e.g., Selenium, Appium, Java, Python).
  • Test Data Management: Manage test data and ensure its availability for automated testing scenarios.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to provide fast feedback to developers.
  • Test Execution: Execute automated test suites and analyse results to identify issues and trends.
  • Reporting: Create and maintain test automation reports and dashboards for tracking test coverage, pass/fail rates, and defect trends.
  • Stay Current: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in test automation and incorporate them into the testing process.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of test automation processes, including test plans, test cases, and automation scripts.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritize testing efforts, resolve issues, and ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Drive Shift Left Automation: work across dev teams to enable reuse of automation framework and scripts with engineering teams.
  • Defining, owning, continuously evolving and implementing the business unit test strategy, leading and setting the direction to keep testing at the cutting edge of new thinking and industry best practice.
  • Applies technical expertise to provide direction and make commercial decisions focused on wider converged technology lifecycle, setting roadmaps and defining and driving towards a desired future state.
  • Sets working standards on processes to improve and drive standardisation and repeatability of technology solutions.
  • Deals with exceptions and requests for assistance with risk mitigation / issue resolution as flagged to them by their team.
  • Analyses and then plans to test for major/complex functional or non-functional test projects. Allocates resources and manages these plans.
Skills and Experience
  • Testing and associated experience / domain knowledge of major voice platforms and systems.
    • Writing test scopes and associated test cases and agreeing these with stakeholders.
  • Technical skills in one or more of the following:
    • VoIP (SIP & RTP)
    • Voice Quality testing techniques (Objective / Subjective)
    • Echo Control
    • Voice band data (modems including Dual Tone Multi-Frequency)
    • Fax, including fax test methods.
  • Knowledge of voice codecs and associated ITU-T, NICC, Openreach SIN standards relating to voice.
  • Experience in one or more of the following systems:
    • Nokia HDM
    • Empirix SVMP
    • Opale Multi-DSLA
    • QualityLogic FaxLab
    • JIRA / Xray
    • Amazon Web Services – Logs Insights
  • Working with wider programmes / line of business delivery organisations.
  • Strong communications skills – both written and verbal.
Preferred
  • Scripting (i.e. Python coding) to aid automation.
  • Experience of continuous development and Continuous Improvement.
  • Experience in ‘Big Data’ technologies: Kibana, Elasticsearch.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages, frameworks and tools.
  • Proficiency in areas such as cloud computing, microservices architecture and containerization.
  • Stakeholder Management: Owns relationships at an operational level with CFU stakeholders and technical escalation points & be able to articulate complex problems to a senior manager/director audience.
  • Business Improvement: Experienced in driving performance and process improvements using data analysis and structured problem‑solving techniques to address the root cause of failures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Skills in using business improvement processes to continually improve processes, anticipate risks and blockers.
  • Time Management: Strong time management skills in management of own processes and a wider matrix managed team.
