Job description

About The Role

What you’ll be doing

St Mary’s Urgent Treatment Centre in central Portsmouth is a modern, friendly, GP‑led service seeing around 6,000 patients each month. We are excited to offer a new opportunity for experienced primary care nurse or paramedic practitioners to join our team through a 12‑month Primary Care Transition Programme, leading into an autonomous Urgent Care Practitioner role.

If you’re motivated, compassionate, and ready to expand your urgent care skillset in a supportive and well‑equipped environment, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll spend most of your week delivering high‑quality clinical care to patients presenting with minor illness, while dedicating protected time to developing your minor injury competencies through structured training, supervision and in‑practice learning.

As part of your development, you will gain experience in:
  • Assessing, investigating and diagnosing minor illness and minor injury
  • Interpreting X‑rays and point‑of‑care tests
  • Independent prescribing for acute presentations
  • Identifying and managing emergencies
  • Supporting and developing colleagues, trainees and the wider team

You’ll work within a highly skilled, multi‑professional environment with access to outstanding support, including GPs, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Reporting Radiographers and Advanced Practitioners. Upon completion of the competency portfolio, you will progress into a fully autonomous Urgent Care Practitioner role.

What we’ll look for in you

You’ll be a registered nurse or paramedic with strong primary or urgent care experience and a passion for delivering safe, effective and compassionate patient care. You’ll bring the confidence to work both independently and as part of a team, along with excellent clinical reasoning, communication and problem‑solving skills.

A commitment to learning is essential—we’re looking for practitioners who are keen to develop advanced urgent care skills, embrace supervision, and support others’ growth. If you thrive in a busy environment and want to advance your career within a supportive and forward‑thinking department, this role could be your perfect next step.
