About the role

As a UK Local Governance Support Team Member, you will play a key part in strengthening governance across Scouts UK by supporting Trustees at every level of the organisation.

You’ll use your subject matter expertise to respond to governance-related queries, create practical resources that help Trustees carry out their responsibilities effectively, and champion best practice in governance.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across Headquarters and the Nations, you will help ensure that robust, consistent, and positive governance becomes embedded throughout the movement - ultimately enabling Scouting to operate safely, legally, and with confidence.

  • Champion and promote good governance across all levels of the organisation.
  • Contribute to the development of guidance, tools, and resources for Trustees.
  • Support Trustee Boards in understanding and embedding effective governance practices.
  • Interpret and explain relevant charity rules, policies, and legislation in an accessible way.
  • Collaborate with UK Teams and contribute to shared goals and initiatives.
  • Attend regular team meetings (primarily online).
  • Provide support to the Team Leaders as needed.
Person specification
  • Ability to engage effectively with young people and promote interest in governance roles.
  • Commitment to championing and supporting The Scouts’ strategy and values.
  • Experience in a governance or compliance-related role (experience outside Scouts is welcome but not essential).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to finding practical solutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently when required.
  • Skilled at adapting communication and working style to suit different audiences and contexts.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support members in other areas.
  • Able to manage time flexibly and balance varying demands.
  • Clear and confident communicator, both verbally and in writing.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and comfortable taking initiative while contributing positively to a team environment.
UK Local Governance Support Team

Thank you for your interest in joining the UK Local Governance Support Team.

In 2023, a new team of nine volunteers came together at Gilwell Park to form the first dedicated group focused on supporting Trustees across the movement. Our members come from every part of the UK and hold a wide range of grassroots roles. This diversity gives us a strong foundation for advising local, regional, and national teams on embedding good governance in a practical and meaningful way.

We work closely with subject matter experts from UK Teams, the Nations, and HQ departments to ensure the resources we develop are relevant, accessible, and useful to volunteers throughout Scouts. As demand for our support continues to grow - whether through regional events, webinars, or short- and long-term HQ projects - we are expanding our team to meet that need.

Every team member brings unique strengths, and we share our work in a way that makes the most of those individual contributions. If you choose to join us, we’ll support you to get involved at a pace that suits you and help you develop confidence in this important and rewarding area.

We’d be delighted to have you as part of the team.
