An opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse to join our busy unit working in the Imaging Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

You will be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and will work within areas of the department including CT, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology and Fluoroscopy.

The Radiology Department also has a second base at Princess Royal Hospital and you will be required to rotate to our Imaging Department there when needed. The main role, however, is at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

You will be an important part of the multidisciplinary team. Radiology experience is desirable but not essential and training will be provided for all areas.

Main duties of the job

To provide professional, direct care to patients showing an awareness of the department objectives and philosophy of care.

To participate in the development of junior staff and assist in the research activities in the unit.

The post holder will work in a multidisciplinary led environment. Adhere strictly to all UHSussex NHS Trust policies and procedures and NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

The Department of Imaging provides services on all of these sites and in addition to this, we provide a service at Hove Polyclinic. The Trust’s specialised and tertiary services include neurosciences, arterial vascular surgery, neonatal, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, infectious diseases and HIV medicine. We are also the major trauma centre for Sussex and the South East.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To ensure optimum use of resources whilst providing high quality nursing care.

Adhere to the Unit Philosophy for patient care to maintain and improve safe holistic care which meets the needs of individual patients.

To work in accordance with all UHSussex NHS Trust policies and protocols. To participate in emergency medical situations in accordance with policies and procedures in the absence of medical support.

Demonstrates highly developed physical skills, accuracy and implementation of the tools and materials.

Responsible for the safe use of equipment.

Responsible for maintaining stock control and also security of stock.

Support and inform family members who often accompany patients for both elective and emergency procedures.

Liaise with referring doctors and ward staff to ensure pre and post procedural care is completed.

Prepare equipment for the safe care of the patient during the procedure. Be able to identify potential complications of various drugs used during the procedure, including contrast medium.

Participate in the planning of the procedure and the management of the procedural list.

Assess, plan and implement the total care of the conscious or conscious-sedated patient. This includes the monitoring of pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation and administration of sedation and documentation.

  • Understanding of a range of clinical procedures and practices which require expertise within a speciality, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience
