Job Summary

Salus Ward is a newly developed 16 bedded mixed gender acute mental health ward for working age adults. It has been designed to maximise space and light to create an open, safe and welcoming environment. Haytor Ward is a 16 bedded acute ward providing care for adults with mental health needs. Haytor is co-located with Salus and Beech ward within the South Devon and Torbay Mental Health Centre at the Torbay General Hospital site. The centre includes adult inpatient wards, an older adults inpatient ward, a psychiatric liaison service, outpatient services and the Home Treatment Team base.

We encourage learning, development and growth. There is a perceptorship programme for newly qualified staff, linked to a broader multidisciplinary CPD programme. We support staff gaining further experience and maintaining professional links through regular profession-specific CPD opportunities. A robust supervision framework and clear clinical and leadership development programmes are in place.

Job Description
Job Responsibilities
  • To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate individual care plans.
  • To provide named nurse role to people who use our service.
  • To promote and improve quality of service provided.
  • To manage the unit in the absence of Ward Manager / Team Leader.
  • To participate in the internal rotation system including weekend working.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • To be a proactive, skilled member of the ward Multi-Disciplinary team.
  • To have knowledge and experience of providing individual and group clinical/therapy work.
  • To demonstrate effective leadership and assist with providing advice and guidance to non-qualified staff and students.
  • To maintain therapeutic relationships, respecting rights, dignity and opportunities for growth of service users.
  • To provide cross-cover to other mental health units on the same site when clinically needed.
  • To work in line with safeguarding protocols and required training.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983 (including 2007 updates), Mental Capacity Act 2005 (including Deprivation of Liberty safeguards), Care Programme Approach, and NHS and Community Care Act 1990.
  • To work to NICE and NMC Guidelines and Standards and follow Trust policies and procedures.
Communication & Working Relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic systems.
  • Maintain professional relationships with the Multi-disciplinary Team.
  • liaise with carers, families and service user representatives, and coordinate with external professionals (GP, Social Worker, Housing, etc.).
Planning & Organisation
  • Act as shift co-ordinator.
  • Take responsibility for the ward in the absence of the Manager as required.
  • Supervise others in line with Trust policy.
Responsibilities for Patient Care, Treatment & Therapy
  • Act as named nurse for a cohort of patients.
  • Assess complex health and wellbeing needs; develop, monitor and review care plans; update records on RiO.
  • Provide robust risk assessments and keep them updated on RiO.
  • Maintain professionalism, ensure safe practice, and adhere to NMC, government and Trust policies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation using electronic systems.
Policy, Service, Research & Development
  • Be aware of national and professional developments.
  • Participate in ongoing training, education and evidence-based practice; engage in audits and service changes.
Resources & Administration
  • Follow Trust policies on handling monies and property; use resources sustainably and cost-effectively.
  • Demonstrate effective risk management.
Supervision, Leadership & Management
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills.
  • Provide supervision and appraisals; mentor students and precept newly qualified staff where appropriate; participate in audits.
Other Tasks
  • Demonstrate knowledge of NMC codes of conduct and government health and social care policy; understand PREP requirements and maintain CPD.
  • Report any incidents of unprofessional behavior, accidents/incidents, faults, and equipment issues to the Ward Manager/Team Leader.
  • Participate in own supervision and CPD.
Qualifications
  • Essential: RMN/Registered Nurse (Mental Health) with current registration. Willingness to complete Trust Mandatory Courses and relevant Physical Interventions training with adjustments if required.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of Recovery principles in Mental Health; safeguarding knowledge for adults and children.
Experience
  • Essential: Experience of adult and/or older persons mental health nursing and the nursing process.
  • Desirable: Experience of working with people with dementia.
Skills
  • Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users, carers and professionals.
  • Ability to assess situations, make decisions, coordinate and organise appropriate responses; risk assessment capability.
