We are seeking to recruit a full time Specialty Doctor to provide inpatient care at Highcroft Hospital in Erdington in the North of Birmingham. You will support the Consultant Psychiatrist with the day-to-day management of patients across two wards and provide support as required across the site.

You will need to hold GMC registration and completed at least four years postgraduate training at least two of which will be within a psychiatry training programme, preferably in an inpatient setting.

Main duties of the job

Our inpatient wards offer an excellent opportunity to manage patients with an acute mental illness that are requiring intensive support for a short period of time. Working with a consultant psychiatrist, you will provide day-to-day clinical management of male patients across George and Eden wards.

Duties will include taking psychiatric histories, performing mental state examinations and formulating the information in a structure manner. You will also attend ward rounds and multi disciplinary team meetings, liaising with other clinical teams for the best care of patients. You may also represent the RMO at Mental Health Review Tribunals and prepare tribunal reports.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will receive hands on support from consultant colleagues, including portfolio development and exposure to a wide range of experiences to aid competency achievement. Specialty Doctor posts provide a great opportunity for experienced psychiatrists, looking to make the next move in their career. You will receive;

  • Recognised medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act.
  • Completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be within a psychiatry training programme or as a fixed term specialty trainee within psychiatry; or have equivalent experience and competences
  • Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development.
  • At least two years experience of working in psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness, preferably in an inpatient setting
  • Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
  • Commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing service needs
  • Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrable interest in the provision of gender sensitive mental health service
  • Able to travel across the community base area
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
  • Broad clinical training in psychiatry including both inpatient and community service
  • Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
  • Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
  • Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project
  • Completed clinically relevant audit projects
  • Skills in working with individuals who are difficult to engage.

You will also be required to sign up to the DBS Update Service before commencement with the Trust. The Trust will reimburse this. You will be contractually obliged to maintain your subscription.

All successful applicants will be required to complete the Trust’s induction programme. The Fundamental (Statutory and Mandatory) training will be in an e-learning format. You will be required to complete training modules online (approx. 9-14 hours depending on post) by the end of your second week with us.
