Job Summary

The Histopathology Department at Dorset Country Hospital is recruiting a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly team. This permanent, full‑time role reports to the Head Biomedical Scientist / Histopathology Laboratory Manager. The successful applicant will have experience in a diagnostic laboratory and specialist knowledge of histopathology processes, ideally with an IBMS Specialist Diploma for Cellular Pathology. HCPC registered individuals without the diploma may be considered for a Band 5 position, subject to timely progression to the Specialist Portfolio.

Main duties

Once fully trained the post holder will lead and contribute to the Histopathology team, ensuring the delivery of routine and urgent histology, non‑gynaecological cytopathology, andrology and immunohistochemistry samples. The role involves close collaboration with consultant histopathologists, laboratory staff and other service users, maintaining UKAS‑accredited ISO15189 (2022) standards and operating within the Southern Counties Pathology network.

Essential
  • HCPC registration
  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of specialist training in histopathology technical areas
  • Completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio for Cellular Pathology
  • At least 3 years post‑registration experience in a histopathology laboratory
  • Evidence of CPD and training in tissue transfer, small dissection, immunohistochemistry techniques, and SOP compliance
  • Strong communication skills with all staff levels and ability to follow and adhere to SOP and local policies
  • Ability to plan, prioritise, work independently and as part of a team, and seek timely support to minimise downtime or resolve technical problems
  • Skill in embedding, microtomy, microscopy QC, and supervision/training of staff
Desirable
  • Experience in an NHS laboratory environment
  • Experience in diagnostic cytology techniques
  • Knowledge of COSHH and risk assessment requirements in the laboratory environment
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication with service users and professionals
