Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Job responsibilities
  • Hold the qualification required to Primary and rapid mike scout cervical smears and comply with NHSCSP accuracy requirements for all staff screening cervical cytology (90% sensitivity for all grades of abnormalities and 95% for high grades).
  • Screen a minimum of 3,000 cytology slides per annum as required by NHSCSP.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of permanent staff, work‑experience students, volunteers and Medical Laboratory Assistants in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Assess and report negative and technically unsuitable cervical cytology specimens and identify potential abnormalities for subsequent interpretation by a designated checker.
  • Retrieve appropriate patient histories to enable pathway management of samples in line with the NHSCSP screening protocol for HPV screening.
  • Use ipassport document controlائهم software to record training and competency and access controlled documents.
  • Perform stain checks to ensure the quality of diagnostic material as per SOP.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment within the department according to Trust and departmental policy.
  • Participate in departmental EQA schemes, internal quality control exercises (including mandatory NHSCSP Screening EQA scheme), and review slides for teaching IQC and clinical governance.
  • Comply with BSPS health and safety procedures and laboratory codes of practice at all times.
  • Authorise HPV negative reports.
  • Assist departmental training team with induction and training of new staff.
