Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic lab technician (HCA) to join our friendly, well organised, and supportive research team at our GP surgery for around 24-28hrs a week, spread over 4 days to include a Monday. This post is available from December, but we are happy to wait for the right candidate.

  • We have recently been selected by the NIHR and Department of Health and Social Care to be a Primary Care Commercial Research Delivery Centre (PC-CRDC), which is due to go-live from 1st November
  • Heavily involved in commercial research for over 10 years, our busy clinical trials unit runs studies covering the whole scope of General Practice. Please see our website www.southglosresearch.org.uk for more details about our site and the studies we run
  • Previous research experience would be beneficial, but not essential, and full training and support will be provided by our experienced team. This could be an exciting change to your normal HCA practice role. Patients are generally very motivated to participate in these studies
  • Opportunities to expand your skills depending on the research project
  • Our current research team includes a Principal Investigator, 3 research nurses, lab technician and research administrator, and we are part of a much wider practice team at the surgery
  • Due to our successful appointment as a PC-CRDC, we are also recruiting an additional research nurse, an Outreach Study Coordinator, second research doctor and administrator. You would be joining an expanding, supportive and enthusiastic team with lots of experience
  • Your roles would include:
    • Working closely with the whole research team
    • Undertaking study-related activities, for example, venepuncture, ECGs, and completing case report forms after study visits
    • Working with patients as they progress through a trial
    • Processing lab samples using a centrifuge (full training provided)
    • Receiving study drug and study supplies deliveries
    • Packaging samples ready for dispatch to central research labs
    • Undertaking training as required for each study and keeping up to date with Good Clinical Practice
    • Undertaking phlebotomy and other HCA tasks on our non-research practice patients
  • You would need to have the following skills and experience:
    • Excellent communication and team-working skills
    • Ability to work independently, with meticulous attention to detail
    • Competent in range of HCA skills such as venepuncture, ECG performing etc
    • Have a degree of flexibility in your working days at times. For example, if a planned study visit falls on a certain day when there is no other research HCA cover, working days may need to be switched that week, including occasional Saturday morning cover. The vast majority of the time, hours will be fixed.
    • Highly effective time management and organisational skills with ability to keep track of multiple studies and their requirements
  • Our GP practice has 14,800 patients and our wider team includes 11 doctors, a Clinical Pharmacy team, Mental Health Nurse, Physios and Paramedics. We are proud to be a sought-after training practice with regular F2s and GP registrars, and an award-winning Core Undergraduate Teaching practice.
  • Located in Yate town centre, an expanding town 10 miles north of Bristol, convenient for all amenities, we are based in a large purpose-built premises with X-ray department on site, and have a small branch surgery in nearby Coalpit Heath
  • Competitive salary - details available on request
