Job description

Working for the right client-side organisation can change everything, especially if you’re coming from a consultancy or the commercial world.

You go from juggling multiple clients to being the one making the decisions. You gain control, ownership, and the satisfaction of actually seeing your projects through, from concept to completion.

The Perse School is one of the leading independent schools in the country, operating across five sites, with 1,710 pupils and around 400 staff. With a 27-acre estate (a rare asset in Cambridge).

You’ll join a forward-thinking Estates team and work directly with the Director of Estates, alongside senior colleagues including the Building Services & Energy Manager, Head of Grounds & Gardens, and Maintenance Manager.

Your focus? Projects.

You’ll support on major capital schemes and lead on all minor works, from feasibility through to handover. Some projects are delivered in-house, while others are handled through consultants and contractors. You’ll be the key point of contact throughout.

Recent multi-million pound capital investment projects include a new sports centre and swimming pool, a new sector leading performing arts centre, and multiple major refurbishments and extensions. Further projects including a major library refurbishment are in the pipeline at this ever evolving estate.

And more importantly, your projects will help maintain and enhance an environment that supports academic excellence. It might sound like a cliché, but here you’ll genuinely see the impact of your work, not just update the bottom line on a spreadsheet.

This role is ideal if you’re looking to take that next step from supporting to owning delivery. You will have worked in project teams delivering capital and maintenance projects, and your background could be in project management, quantity surveying, architecture, or general construction.

You don’t need specific school experience, but you do need to understand the nature of the sector and its stakeholders. Experience working with similarly structured clients or organisations, whether in the third sector, public sector, or similar environments is key.

Now for the benefits. You’ll receive 30 days of annual leave to start with, plus bank holidays. There’s a generous pension scheme with employer contributions of 13.75%, along with death-in-service cover at three times your salary. You’ll enjoy free lunches during term time and parts of the school holidays, free on-site parking, and access to the cycle-to-work scheme. Staff also benefit from free use of the fitness suite and swimming pool, and support for continued professional development.
