Job summary

A leading chemical manufacturer in the UK is seeking a Process Safety Specialist to ensure compliance with COMAH regulations and improve Process Safety Performance across the organization. The successful candidate will require a degree in Chemical/Process Engineering, ideally at chartered level, and have at least 10 years of experience in the chemical industry, with a focus on process safety. This position demands excellent communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in operations or engineering in the chemical industry.
  • At least 5 years in a process safety role.
  • Experience leading HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA studies.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Process Safety Specialist at the West Thurrock site.

Purpose of the role

The purpose of this role is to be responsible for assuring COMAH compliance and driving continuous improvement in Process Safety Performance across ICLs two upper tier COMAH sites and other operational sites where applicable.

Key Accountabilities
  • Establish and maintain effective systems, procedures and processes to streamline existing COMAH management systems to achieve consistency in approach and ensuring that procedures are clearly detailed and followed with resulting COMAH actions recorded and successfully completed.
  • Work alongside the Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs, Group SHE Manager and our specialist contractors to ensure the COMAH safety reports are up to date and accurate
  • Facilitate the proper completion of new PHAs and LOPAs, and plan and manage the revalidation of all company HAZOPs as part of a 5-year rolling revalidation programme, liaising with external 3rd party specialists.
  • Provide process safety guidance and design support for engineering, projects and maintenance works – such as pressure relief systems, safety instrumentation, ATEX/DSEAR, and Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA)
  • Assess the risks identified in the Group’s PHAs and work with the Engineering and Operations teams in ensuring all risks are ALARP.
  • Develop and maintain the company’s MOC procedure and processes, ensuring the manufacturing sites are following and complying with the procedure and close-out actions
  • Identify and address gaps in process safety information and documentation across the group
  • Identify training and qualification needs for Process Safety management and COMAH compliance across the Group
  • Support in the production of the Group’s monthly PSPI report and work with the relevant teams to ensure PSPIs are on track and ensuring that senior managers are aware of and acting on relevant information
Qualifications:
  • Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. Chemical/Process Engineering)
  • Chartered Engineer
Personal Attributes:
  • Strong communicator of technical and safety information, both verbally and in writing
  • Works well within a wider multidisciplined team
  • Able to comprehend complex technical data and engineering specifications
  • Highly organised and capable of managing competing priorities
Experience and knowledge:
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience within an operations or engineering function in a manufacturing / process area within the chemical industry, including at least 5 years in a process safety role.
  • Experience leading or taking a significant role in HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA studies
  • Experience with Management of Change systems
  • Experience working on Upper Tier COMAH Sites.
