Job description
SUMMARY

Responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the set-up and operation of the heart‑lung machine and related equipment for open heart surgical patients. Maintains a high degree of skill in operating and maintaining equipment and an understanding of the principles and methodology of current perfusion techniques and pacemaker technology. Participates in the marketing of the perfusionist service to the Medical staff. Maintains active communication with the Medical staff, peers, and the Perioperative staff. Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

ATTRIBUTES
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing and/or Cardiovascular Perfusion program required
  • Valid NYS Perfusion Permit or NYS license in Perfusion
  • At least 3 years of experience in perfusion preferred
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Practice
  • Implements perfusion practice and pacemaker procedures, in accordance with hospital policy and procedure, departmental, area and national standards
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to patients from the age of thirteen (13) years on
  • Chooses appropriate oxygenator and accessory equipment in accordance with current perfusion standards and medical staff preference
  • Assembles, primes and inspects the integrity of the bypass circuit
  • Maintains sterile technique during the use of all equipment
  • Operate heart‑lung machine and keeps the surgeon informed of patient status. Attempts to maintain normal physiologic parameters according to current perfusion standards of practice during the bypass period (i.e. - blood pressure, blood gas values, blood flow rates)
  • Interprets lab data and takes appropriate action to correct abnormal values. Works in conjunction with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to provide optimal care
  • Recognizes, evaluates and corrects all emergency perfusion situations which may arise during the bypass period
  • Prepares and administers antibiotics and other drugs used during the bypass period
  • Assists other perfusionists by drawing blood samples and performing appropriate lab studies
  • Evaluates new equipment in the surgical setting, providing feedback and recommendations to the Nurse Manger
  • Performs preventative maintenance calibration and cleaning of all equipment
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of all procedures and ensures proper placement in the patients chart and permanent perfusion record
  • Assists in the insertion of permanent pacemakers. Operates pacemaker analyzers and programmers
  • Assumes on‑call duties
  • Evaluates own performance based on Perfusion Standards of Practice
  • Ensures a safe and supportive environment for staff, medical staff, patients, residents, and students
  • Follows policy/procedure for Cardiovascular operations
  • Removes identified faulty equipment from service and notifies Nurse Manger
  • Disposes of contaminated materials in accordance with Infection Control policy
  • Maintains active communication with surgeon and anesthesiologist during the bypass period to ensure provision of safe quality patient care
  • Attends 100% CPR, Fire Safety, Infection Control and Disaster Plan in‑services
Age Specific Competency Training
  • Participates in Age Specific Competency Training, within 12‑month period of time and demonstrates the ability to obtain information and assess patient needs
  • Applies the knowledge of growth and development stages in direct patient/customer interactions, as observed by the supervisor.
Continuing Education
  • Completes 100% of hospital‑required mandatory in‑services.
  • Participates in presentations of surgical case reviews with peers.
  • Attends 75% of scheduled monthly in‑services.
  • Maintains 15 CEU per year inclusive of mandatory programs.
  • Obtains and/or maintains current American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certification with its CEU and clinical requirements.
Materials Management
  • Facilitates the systematic maintenance of material resources to support the Cardiovascular Department functions
  • Handles equipment carefully and is familiar with its operation and maintenance
  • Completes itemized patient charge sheet for each procedure
  • Notifies Nurse Manager of depleted supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $64.00 - $84.00
