Job description
Nature Conservation and Estate Manager in the Chilterns

Are you passionate about nature conservation and skilled in managing diverse landscapes? Litmore Shaw, an exceptional 35-acre estate in the heart of the Chilterns, is seeking an experienced and proactive manager to lead the stewardship and enhancement of our unique habitats.

This is a rare opportunity to take responsibility for a mosaic of chalk grassland meadows, ancient and developing woodlands, traditional orchards, and exceptional formal gardens. You will play a pivotal role in the implementation and further development of our conservation management plan, with a strong focus on:

  • Hedge-laying and Boundary Management: Restoring and maintaining traditional hedgerows to support wildlife corridors and enhance landscape character.
  • Conservation Grazing: Overseeing seasonal grazing regimes that promote biodiversity, collaborating with local farmers to bring livestock for maintaining species-rich swards and preventing scrub encroachment.
  • SSSI and Wildflower Meadow Management: Managing a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and extensive wildflower meadows, monitoring indicator species, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Orchard and Woodland Development: Planning and delivering orchard restoration and expansion, as well as woodland creation and sustainable management for wildlife and amenity value.
  • Monitoring and Record Keeping: Conducting periodic photographic monitoring and maintaining detailed biodiversity records to inform adaptive management.

You will supervise one or two assistants as well as contractors, report directly to the property owner, and ensure all work meets the highest standards of conservation and horticulture. The role requires hands‑on experience, sound knowledge of machinery, and a practical, solutions‑focused approach. Physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all conditions are essential.

Professional Development and Health & Safety

We are committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of our staff. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive skills training, including opportunities for certification in Emergency First Aid at Work, Health & Safety regulations, and safe operation of machinery such as tractors, mowers, and chainsaws. You will be expected to maintain a safe working environment, with all necessary health & safety protocols rigorously observed.

Remuneration and Requirements

A generous salary will be offered to a candidate with the right qualifications and experience. Applicants should have a proven track record in nature conservation, estate management, or a related field, a driving licence, and their own vehicle. References and a DBS check will be required at offer stage.
