We need individuals who can offer a place of safety and stability for children of all ages. There are many reasons why a child may need fostering, it could be due to abuse or neglect. At a critical time in their lives, children need foster carers who are understanding and committed to supporting them. Fostering may not always be easy but it can be incredibly rewarding.

Foster Carers are ordinary people who are doing something extraordinary. It is important to us that we find the best match for every child, so no matter your background or your current circumstance – you could foster. We encourage all people who have a genuine interest in working with children to speak with us about fostering.

There are many different types of fostering to meet the needs of different children. These range from short‑term to long‑term placements. For most children fostering is only temporary. There is a support network that exists for the child’s birth family, so that when it is safe and appropriate, the child may return to their care. Where possible we look to place Island children with Island Foster Carers so that the relationships with their family and friends can be nurtured through regular contact and reunification.

As a Foster Carer you would be expected to include children in your family life and everyday routines as if they were a child of your own. You will have a responsibility to get them to and from school, help them with their homework, support their interests and promote a healthy lifestyle – but most importantly you will become someone who they can trust and depend on.

Each child has a support network of professionals, working in the background to ensure that the child’s needs are being met – these include Social Workers, Health Practitioners and Education Providers. You will be required to work with these professionals, acting as an advocate for the child to ensure their voice is heard. Together you will follow the child’s care plan, ensuring that the child receives the best possible support and opportunities to thrive.

Although you may only be in their life for a short time, you can be the positive change that they need in their childhood, building foundations for a brighter future.
