Lead Software Engineer
Graphics Unlimited (Vic) Pty Ltd is looking for a Lead Software Engineer who will join our team to design, develop, and support high quality software solutions.
About the role
This role is part of DWP Digital, the UK's largest government department, providing services to over 20 million users. You will lead multiple engineering teams, promote best practices, drive innovation, and shape future technology solutions that deliver real value to millions of users.
Responsibilities
- Set engineering standards and promote best practices across teams.
- Lead multiple engineering teams, ensuring the right people work on the right problems.
- Define priorities, delegate effectively, and coach teams to build capability.
- Resolve blockers, foster collaboration across the engineering community, and influence the organization's technical vision.
- Advance engineering practices across DWP and government, accelerating adoption of microservices and event‑driven architectures.
- Support the next generation of engineers through coaching and recruitment.
Qualifications
- Proven software engineering expertise in design, development, and support of complex systems.
- Leadership experience managing multiple engineering teams, setting standards, and driving consistency.
- Strong knowledge of microservices, event‑driven architectures, and modern engineering practices.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
- Familiarity with technical governance, domain‑driven design, and continuous improvement in engineering practices.
Work details
- Location: A digital hub in Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle – whichever is most convenient.
- Hybrid working: 40 % remote, 60 % on site, with regular travel between hubs.
- Pay: Up to £92,522, with a Digital Allowance of up to £12,225 per annum for exceptional candidates.
- Pension: Civil service pension with 28.97 % employer contributions, up to £23,253 per year.
- Holidays: 26–31 days, plus up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi‑time, plus public holidays.
