Lead Gas & Power Market Analyst – London

EP Commodities London is expanding its analytical capabilities to capture additional trading and optimisation opportunities across continental Europe. We are seeking a Lead Gas & Power Market Analyst with strong understanding of European energy fundamentals and proven experience in power plant optimisation, dispatch behaviour and hedging strategies. A core responsibility of this role is to produce integrated power, gas and emissions forecasts up to 5 years ahead, and collaborate with the holding company on long-term system outlooks extending to 2050+. The role combines market analysis, commercial insight, modelling leadership, and close cooperation with traders and portfolio managers.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Market Analysis & Short/Mid-Term Forecasting (0–5 years)
  • Deliver integrated power, gas and EUA market views for UK, NL and DE, including supply–demand dynamics, renewable generation patterns, outages, thermal availability, fuel prices, LNG flows and interconnector behaviour
  • Produce actionable short-, medium- and long-term forecasts (up to 5 years) and scenario-based sensitivities covering policy changes, RES expansion, fuel price shocks, nuclear availability, and structural demand changes
  • Identify key drivers behind price developments and provide concise daily/weekly commentary
2. Trading & Hedging Strategy Support
  • Identify commercial opportunities across:
    • Location spreads (DE–FR, DE–NL, UK–EU)
    • Time spreads (month, quarter, season, CAL)
    • Clean spark, clean dark and lignite spreads
    • Hourly shapes and structural opportunities
  • Translate market fundamentals into clear hedging recommendations for UK/NL/DE power plants
  • Integrate cross-commodity insights (gas–power–LNG–carbon) into trade and optimisation strategies
3. Power Stack Modelling – Leadership
  • Lead development and calibration of mid-/long-term stack models (Genscape, EPSI, Aurora, PyPSA, PLEXOS or in-house tools)
  • Ensure accurate modelling of thermal behaviour, renewable profiles, load factors, congestion, cross-border flows and merit-order dynamics
  • Work closely with quant developers to automate pipelines, improve data quality and standardise model governance
4. Long-Term Outlooks (2050+)
  • Collaborate with the holding-company long-term analytics team on system evolution, capacity mix, decarbonisation pathways and price trajectories to 2050+
  • Provide insights on renewable penetration, system flexibility needs, demand evolution, and long-run marginal cost trends
5. Team Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Mentor junior analysts and ensure high analytical standards across the London analytics team
  • Represent analytics in portfolio meetings and trading discussions
  • Prepare clear reports, dashboards and presentations for traders, management and optimisation teams
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience in European power & gas market analytics
  • Proven experience with asset optimisation, dispatch modelling, hedging and P&L drivers
  • Strong hands‑on experience with fundamental stack modelling
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to summarise complex analysis into actionable views
  • EU languages (DE/NL/FR/IT) are a strong advantage
  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to operate in a trading‑driven environment
