Working 36.5 hours per week

CYPTS currently provide transport to 6,000 children and young people who would not be able to attend education without this support.

This is an exciting time to join the Children and Young Peoples’ Travel Service (CYPTS) as we have recently gone through a service redesign.

There is now the opportunity to join the CYPTS Team to support the delivery of our statutory duty of providing suitable transport for eligible students, ensuring that their needs are met and promoting independence and sustainable transport.

Under the direction of the Independent Travel Training Lead, the role of Independent Travel Trainer is a new role crucial to the success of CYPTS Independent Travel Training Programme.

Responsibilities
  • Promote the development towards independence of young people in Birmingham
  • Undertake initial assessments of potential students for travel training
  • Plan journey, read timetables and use journey planning and travel tools
  • Provide 1:1 training and support to young people with learning and other difficulties to enable them to travel independently, whilst ensuring their safety during training.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of training and outcomes
  • Work with school colleges to develop Independent travel skills and instigate referrals.
  • Under the direction of the Independent Travel Training Lead will with the team organise and deliver community events, workshops and group sessions to promote independent travel to schools, parent groups and young people.
  • Travel across the geographical area of Birmingham as required
Qualifications

You will need to have experience of working with vulnerable children and/or adults with learning disabilities and physical disabilities and understand difficulties parents/carers may face when supporting an independent travel programme.

Work Conditions

Please note:

  • The hours may be varied with early starts and late finish as training is to and from school.
  • Candidates must be available during school holidays as these are our busy times and be able to travel across Birmingham in special schools.
