Job description

Use your writing skills to help save lives at sea. The Maritime Search and Rescue Council seeks a Volunteer Grant Writer to secure funding for SAR initiatives, training, and outreach across the globe. Make a real impact on maritime safety.

What difference will you make?

Your work will have a direct, life‑saving impact. By securing funding for global maritime SAR initiatives, you’ll enable critical training for responders, advancement of SAR research, and delivery of other vital projects, all aimed at reducing loss of life at sea worldwide.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone with strong writing and research skills with experience in grant writing or funding applications within the charity, non‑profit, or international development sectors. You should be able to analyse funding criteria, structure persuasive proposals, and communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively. Familiarity with maritime issues, emergency response, or global humanitarian work is a bonus, though not essential. Attention to detail, self‑motivation, and the ability to work independently—as well as collaboratively with a remote team—are important. A genuine interest in making a global impact through improved maritime safety will help you thrive in this role.

What will you be doing?

The Maritime Search and Rescue Council (MSARC) is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Grant Writer to support our mission of enhancing maritime search and rescue (SAR) capability on a global scale. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about writing, research, and making a tangible difference in worldwide maritime safety. As our Volunteer Grant Writer, you will work closely with our leadership team to identify, research, and apply for suitable grant opportunities that align with MSARC’s aims. Your primary responsibility will be to craft persuasive, well‑researched grant proposals to secure funding for SAR initiatives, including but not limited to:

  • Global capacity‑building and training programmes for SAR responders
  • Impactful research in maritime SAR
  • International SAR collaboration and knowledge‑sharing platforms
  • Operational support and strategic growth of MSARC programmes and infrastructure

Your main deliverable will be the successful submission of grant applications to government bodies, international institutions, philanthropic foundations, and other potential funders. This includes preparing written proposals, gathering supporting materials, assisting with budget information, and managing submission timelines. You will work directly with MSARC’s Board and SAR Project Officer.
