Job Vacancy: External Sales Engineer – South of England

Location: South of England (Flexible within region)

About the Role

We are looking for a passionate and technically skilled External Sales Engineer to join our growing team in the South of England. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong technical background and a talent for building customer relationships across a diverse range of industries including water utilities, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, petrochemical, aggregates, and general manufacturing.

You will take ownership of the sales process, from identifying new opportunities to closing deals and supporting long-term customer success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Sales Director.
  • Demonstrate and promote products, clearly presenting features, advantages, and customer benefits.
  • Develop new business opportunities by identifying prospects and converting leads into long-term customers.
  • Manage and nurture existing client accounts through regular contact, site visits, and participation in industry events and exhibitions.
  • Deliver accurate sales forecasts and meet/exceed set sales targets and gross profit goals.
  • Schedule and attend customer/site meetings as required.
  • Collaborate closely with internal departments including Projects, Technical Support, and Operations.
  • Provide pre-sales technical advice and product selection support.
  • Manage all enquiries effectively, ensuring timely responses in line with KPIs.
  • Maintain and update opportunities within the CRM system.
  • Prepare detailed quotations based on customer requirements, site visits, or consultations.
  • Take part in quotation review meetings and follow up on quotes to secure orders.
  • Negotiate with suppliers and manufacturers regarding pricing, lead times, and terms.
  • Understand customer requirements and recommend appropriate technical solutions.
  • Build and manage a strong pipeline of opportunities.
  • Monitor competitor activity and market trends to identify threats and opportunities.
  • Stay informed of upcoming industry projects and future customer needs.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Proven technical sales experience in one or more relevant industry sectors.
  • Sound knowledge of mechanical, electrical, or process instrumentation and control systems.
  • Ability to identify client needs and deliver bespoke technical solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proactive and target-driven with a self-starter mentality.
  • Familiarity with CRM tools and modern sales practices.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel across the South of England.
