  • Detective Qualified (PIP2)

If the above applies to you, we look forward to receiving your application. We will assess both your suitability and our current resourcing requirements once you have submitted your application.

Officers must be serving or previously serving (in the last 5 years) and have completed their probationary period. You must be or have been serving with a Home Office Force, or Police Scotland/PSNI.

Join as a Superintendent or Chief Superintendent

We are looking for leaders who are passionate about serving the communities of Northumbria and have the drive and enthusiasm to deliver high levels of performance.

Why should you choose Northumbria Police?

Should you successfully join Northumbria Police, you can look forward to joining a force that offers exciting opportunities for development and personal growth, with progression opportunities at all ranks. With a diverse force area ranging from rural Northumberland to the bustling urban centres of Newcastle and Sunderland you can expect a real range of exciting challenges and opportunities.

Get a local’s point of view

Whether you are looking to relocate with your family, partner, or moving to develop your career, we have something to offer everyone. If you want to find out further information about the wide variety of staff and officer roles available as well as the area we police please email careers@northumbria.police.uk – we are keen to help you make an informed decision.

Staff wellbeing and development

At Team NP our promotions process is not just a single annual event, but a pathway of development. You’ll have the flexibility to complete the pathway at a time that’s right for you and a portfolio of development allows you to make the work you do every day count towards your assessment.

From our mental health first aiders to our 24/7 employee assistance line, or even our suite of on-site gyms, we prioritise your wellbeing both in and out of work. Including our enhanced family-friendly and flexible working policies which allow you to take time out when you need it most.

Policing Challenges

Within our force area we have the vibrant hotspots of Newcastle and Sunderland, offering you the chance to get involved in fast-paced city centre policing and the night time economy. We also police Northumberland, the least populated English county. Here, you’ll be working at the heart of rural policing, problem-solving community issues and targeting cross-county crime. With such diversity, there’s something for everyone to sink their teeth into.

Our force area offers city and countryside on your doorstep – making a fantastic base to live and work. Cost of living and house prices are significantly more affordable in the North East than in other areas, meaning a great quality of life. Beyond Newcastle’s vibrant nightlife, it’s an ideal location for families with some of the country’s best coastline on offer in Northumberland and exceptional schools across the region.

What to expect for transfers

Review your eligibility against the conditions to become a police officer and understand the application process and preparation required. Thriving support networks, our investment in your wellbeing and development and more.

FAQs
  • Will a transfer affect my police officer pay progression? No, transferring to Northumbria Police will not affect your progression to the next pay point on the salary scale. You will continue to receive your annual increment on the same date as you would in your current force, based on your start date in your current rank.
  • Do I have to travel to Northumbria for my medical assessment? Yes, as a transferee or rejoiner you will need to attend Northumbria Police Occupational Health for your medical assessment and substance misuse test. Our Occupational Health centre is based in Newcastle city centre.
  • Am I eligible to transfer police forces? To transfer as an officer, you must be serving or have been previously serving (in the last 5 years) and have completed your probationary period. You must be or have been serving with a Home Office Force, or Police Scotland/PSNI. Please refer to our additional eligibility criteria for more info.
  • Can I specify where I would like to transfer to? We will do our best to accommodate your wishes for location preference as part of the recruitment process but this will depend on the vacancies available at the time of posting, your skill set and the Force’s current priority areas. As a result you can be posted anywhere within the force area. You can, however, specify a preference and make us aware of any extenuating circumstances which will be taken into consideration. Placements will be discussed with you at the point of final offer.
  • Can I apply for a transfer if I am part time? If you’re working part-time hours in your current force, we can still accept an application from you. If you’re successful, you will need to apply for flexible working. We’ll assess this application against the needs of your department and the shift you’re joining, as well as taking into account your own needs for part time hours.
  • Can I apply for a transfer if I am currently on a career break? Being on a career break does not prevent you from applying for a transfer to a police officer role in Northumbria. However, you must have returned to your force prior to any transfer taking place.
  • Can I apply for a transfer if I am currently absent due to sickness? If you are successful at interview for a transfer position, you will be required to pass the fitness test. It is therefore expected that you will be fit and currently fulfilling your current role at the time of applying.
  • When do I need to tell my current force that I am applying for a transfer? You can choose when to let your force know about your intention to transfer. However, once you pass the interview stage, we’ll contact your HR and Professional Standards Department and ask you to complete a consent form. This gives us permission to reach out to your current Occupational Health Unit to transfer your records. When we make the final offer, we’ll also contact your current force to request your training records and references. As with any other application into policing, you shouldn’t give formal notice to your current employer until your pre-employment checks are complete. You should also wait for written confirmation of your transfer date. We will always try to give you at least 28 days’ notice of your transfer date.
  • What training will I receive if I transfer to Northumbria? You’ll join a 3 day induction session at our Coach Lane Campus in Newcastle, followed by a 2 day Public and Personal Safety Training refresher. You’ll then join an area command and we will arrange any relevant training courses to help you settle into your new position. Beyond your initial training, we aim to support the continuous professional development of our officers throughout their career with us. If you’ve joined us from Police Scotland or PSNI, you will also be booked onto PACE and English Law training.
  • Will I receive removal or relocation expenses? Unfortunately, the Force is not able to provide a removal or relocation cost for transferees.
