Job description

To promote fairness and consistency, all new starters will begin at the bottom of the pay band. This reflects our commitment to equity across the organisation and aligns with the approach taken with existing staff during the transition. While the starting salary is fixed, the role offers excellent scope for growth, meaningful contribution, and being part of a forward-thinking team. The starting salary for this position is £14.59 per hour. A market rate supplement has been awarded to this position which applies until May 2027 and will top up the hourly rate to £17.69 for casual employees, plus Holiday Pay. Enhancements are also paid on the base rate for hours worked on Bank Holidays, as 'night work' (20:00 to 06:00), or if the total weekly hours exceed 37.

Role Purpose

To provide engaging training sessions to customers of all ages, ensuring safety at all times within a fun environment, to improve people’s skills, abilities and general health within swimming programmes.

Main Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver exciting, structured coaching sessions to encourage the development of participants.
  • Provide a safe environment, taking all reasonable precautions including health and safety checks, to ensure the safety of all participants during the session.
  • Ensure all equipment is fit for use and used correctly by all the participants to make sure the sessions are safe for all participants.
  • Monitor and assess ability and progress in line with the sport’s governing body to support the participants’ improvement. This includes informing parents/guardians of pupil development where applicable.
  • Undertake relevant administrative duties, such as taking attendance registers and maintaining participant records, to support the smooth-running of lessons and coaching sessions.
  • Provide support and guidance to more junior Coaching roles, so that they can help run sessions effectively.
  • Utilise technology to inform the customer service team and customers of pupil movements/progressions between classes, where applicable, to keep waiting lists to a minimum.
  • Communicate with any relevant stakeholders/partners/professionals, to maintain a positive referral routes and interest into the Council’s exercise and fitness programmes.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Relevant Level 2 qualification in teaching swimming.
  • Experience of coaching adults and children.
  • Experience of designing sessions for specific groups.
  • Knowledge of health and safety as it relates to the specific sport/activity.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding protocols.
  • Ability to instruct and communicate in a clear and positive manner, and to provide support and guidance and cause understanding in others.
  • Ability to plan and co-ordinate training sessions.
  • Availability for shifts which may include evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Opportunities to work between the BCP Leisure facilities including Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex (BH23 1HW), Rossmore Leisure Centre (BH12 4HR) and Poole Dolphin Leisure Centre (BH15 1TN).
