Overview

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that won a 2024 New London Architecture award and has raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces.

What difference will you make?

Contribute to the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds. Your strategic content creation will be instrumental in fostering a strong connection between our community, the park, and its biodiversity. Your input will help us craft compelling narratives that inspire, educate, and engage our service users, stakeholders, funders, and the general public, ultimately driving support for the park's mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

What are we looking for?
  • Editorial Vision & Strategy
    Guiding the creation of content that amplifies community voices, celebrates local environmental initiatives, and inspires actionable engagement with green spaces and sustainability efforts.
  • Strong Editing & Proofreading Skills
    Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Experience editing diverse content formats.
  • Content Design & Development
    Ability to write clear, concise, and engaging content that is appropriate for diverse audiences. Experience in developing and adapting content for various platforms. Strong storytelling and narrative skills.
  • Visual Communication
    Understanding of visual hierarchy and how to use images and graphics effectively to enhance communication. Basic knowledge of design principles and layout.
  • Community Engagement Focus
    Interest in and understanding of community-led projects and their importance. Ability to adapt content to resonate with the specific needs and interests of the local community.
  • Desirable Skills & Experience
    Experience with content management systems. Basic graphic design skills (e.g., using tools like Canva). Interest in environmental sustainability and urban green spaces. Volunteer experience with community organisations.
  • Key Qualities

What will you be doing?

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that aims to engage the public in building support for the project. You will participate in the community-led working group that grows support through public engagement work. There is opportunity to lead on engagement projects exploring how architects, ecologists, community researchers, political campaigners, fundraisers and communications professionals come together to create community infrastructure. If interested, there are project opportunities across communications including content creation, social media, PR, newsletters, film, podcasts, long-form video content, or other channels of interest, and the possibility to facilitate the strategic direction of the working group. The Comms Circle currently meets fortnightly on a Tuesday evening via Google Meet and completes agreed tasks remotely.
