We make health happen:

As a Senior Cardiothoracic Physiotherapist, you will be able to confidently carry out your duties as an autonomous practitioner. You will work as a cardiothoracic specialist in a wider inpatient MDT.

You will triage and manage patient referrals from both inpatients and outpatients with varied conditions including complex or chronic presentations or multiple comorbidities. Your caseload will include conditions such as cardiac, abdominal and head and neck surgeries, complex medical respiratory admissions, and respiratory conditions including COPD, Bronchiectasis, Long COVID and breathing pattern disorders.

We will need you to work over multiple wards, including acute admissions unit, intensive care, surgical, cardiac and medical wards as required. Referrals may also include pre‑admission and pre‑operative assessment, post‑operative intervention and recovery programmes. You will receive referrals from the wards, acute admissions unit, outpatient consultants and GP clinics as well as via external routes.

Participation in developing and implementing outpatient rehabilitation pathways is essential, for example a cardiac rehabilitation programme and pre‑habilitation for major surgeries. You will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in service development and expand a range of skills across the cardiothoracic service.

This role includes participation in the emergency adult respiratory on‑call rota, being complaint with the required respiratory competencies and covering both weekday, weekends and bank holidays as the service requires. You will have the opportunity to cover weekend service as additional bank shifts.

What you'll do:
  • To practise as an autonomous and accountable professional using reflective practise and advanced clinical reasoning skills in undertaking specialist assessment to provide an individualised treatment programme with client‑centred goals.
  • To provide appropriate and accurate information, education and support for your client groups and their carers.
  • To participate in discharge planning and liaise with external agencies to ensure a discharge that is safe and supportive of the patient's ongoing care and rehabilitation needs. This could include home assessments within our catchment area.
  • To confidently use respiratory equipment, updating competencies as upskill is required and to participate in the training and upskilling of the wider team.
  • To attend any speciality MDT meetings and establish rapport with the wider MDT including but not limited to consultants, specialist nurses, and other relevant professionals.
  • To participate in the induction of new and less experienced staff members.
  • To inspire others and promote participation to enhance the individual attributes and collective strengths of the team.
What you'll bring:
  • Degree in Physiotherapy.
  • HCPC registration membership.
  • Proven broad experience in the field of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy including acute respiratory, critical care, general surgery and general medical caseloads.
  • Knowledge of specialist devices appropriate to respiratory care.
  • Passionate and competent in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Experience with tracheostomy care and complex weaning.
  • Respiratory On‑call experience and availability.
