About the role

The Electronics Design Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and integration of advanced electronic systems for next-generation healthcare sensor technologies within the Infection Innovation Technology Laboratory (iiTECH). The postholder will be responsible for developing robust electronic circuitry and embedded systems that underpin novel microwave handheld and wearable sensing devices aimed at the detection, monitoring, and prevention of infectious diseases. Working as a part of multidisciplinary research and development team, the appointee will contribute to the full lifecycle of sensor technology innovation from conceptual design and prototyping through to clinical validation and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include fostering and sustaining interdisciplinary collaborations, contributing to human-centred design and clinical evaluation, and implementing rigorous quality assurance and regulatory standards to ensure device reliability and translational readiness.

This position offers a unique opportunity to push boundaries of sensor technologies, foster innovation, and develop transformative solutions for global health applications.

Key responsibilities
  • Design and prototype advanced electronic circuitry for handheld and wearable sensor devices targeting early detection, monitoring and prevention of health conditions.
  • Develop and integrate low-noise analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit architectures, including microwave and RF components, for precision sensing applications
  • Conduct iterative testing and refinement of sensor designs to optimise performance and usability
  • Collaborate with data scientists to interface hardware with AI and ML algorithms.
  • Design embedded systems and firmware for real-time data acquisition and wireless communication.
  • Develop and implement rigorous testing and validation protocols to assess the reliability, accuracy, and stability of electronic circuits and integrated systems.
  • Design and prototype circuitry in alignment with environmental and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing to ensure robust operation under varied physiological and clinical conditions
  • Ensure adherence to international standards and regulatory frameworks relevant to electronic or medical devices.
  • Work closely with academic, industry, and clinical partners to align objectives and address user needs.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals and present at international conferences.
  • Contribute to translating research findings into practical applications by supporting collaborations with industry partners
You will have
  • PhD or equivalent industrial experience in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline with a focus on electronic circuit design or sensor technologies.
  • Proven expertise in designing and prototyping of electronic circuits for handheld or wearable sensor devices
  • Proficiency in analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including experience with microwave and RF components for sensing and communications.
  • Experience in conducting experimental validation and iterative development of technological solutions
  • Experience using electronic design automation (EDA) tools namely Eagle and laboratory instrumentation for circuit testing and characterisation
  • Strong track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals or writing industrial reports
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present findings clearly to diverse audiences
