Job description
Role Overview

We are recruiting three Consultants with a special interest in emergency general surgery to support the reconfiguration of emergency general surgical services at the Royal United Hospital Bath (RUH). Successful applicants will join one other Consultant providing daytime cover Monday to Thursday and will provide daytime consultant supervision of the emergency surgical admission unit (SAU), same‑day emergency care service (SDEC) and emergency theatres.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daytime consultant cover Monday to Thursday, supervising the SAU, SDEC and emergency theatres.
  • Provide night and weekend on‑call cover as part of a 1‑in‑12 rota, including prospective cover.
  • Manage patients presenting with acute biliary pathology, performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients with acute cholecystitis.
  • Collaborate with Upper GI Consultants to offer inpatient emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis and gallstone pancreatitis.
  • Assist in the preparation of business plans and resource management within the department.
  • Participate in audit, directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinician of General Surgery.
  • Engage in teaching and research activities, supporting projects, courses and the medical student academy affiliated with Bristol Medical School.
Additional Information

Flexible sessions within the job plan allow prospective cover of the acute surgical unit when other emergency Consultants are on leave and the opportunity to undertake elective activity such as endoscopy sessions, out‑patient clinics and elective lists, depending on clinical interests.
