Job overview

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust are seeking an additional Consultant Haematologists to join our well-established and high performing Haematology Department. This vacancy is to deliver 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including 1 PA on call within the Haematology service. The department is happy to support flexible working and will consider applicants seeking part time or job share roles to fill this vacancy.

The West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) are currently supporting Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the development of a joint service. This will lead to other potential opportunities to support the teaching hospital with their haematology service in the future.

The successful candidates will work alongside our substantive consultants, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and an experienced team of Clinical Nurse Specialists to deliver the highest quality haematology care to the patients of Harrogate and District. The service is predominantly outpatient based, with the team delivering clinics from our modern and purpose-built facility, the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre (SROMC), which includes a dedicated 14-chaired Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) Unit. The post-holder will also provide specialist input to inpatients under Haematology and other clinical teams.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will take a proactive and engaged approach to all that they do. They will lead by example, demonstrating and championing the core values of Harrogate and District NHS foundation trust: Kindness, Integrity, Teamwork and Equality.

The Consultant Haematologist role will focus on:

  • The provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
  • Working with Consultant colleagues to ensure appropriate cover arrangements are in place for annual leave, planned or unplanned urgent cover
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures
  • Carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in Continued Professional Development

There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to lead on the development of specific areas of interest.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is an active member of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT). The haematology department work closely with colleagues from the Tertiary Cancer Centre at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, in particular, contributing to an ongoing WYAAT-led programme of service improvement work for haematology.

  • Specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible within 6 months of interview)
