Job description

Applications are invited for appointment, from 1 September 2026, to a 12-hour College Lectureship and Fellowship in English, tenable for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of re-appointment to the retirement age. The successful applicant will assist in supervising and directing studies in English in the College, and will participate in the admission of undergraduate students, which includes outreach work. Applicants should have a strong record of teaching English literature, as well as a record of research and publication commensurate with the stage of their career.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach the following papers from the Cambridge English Tripos: Shakespeare (Part IA, Paper 2) and English Literature and its Contexts, 1500-1700 (Part IB, Paper 5). An ability also to teach Tragedy (Part II, Paper 2), and drama more generally, will be welcome. In addition, the successful applicant will be able to supervise dissertations on topics in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature in English, the Practical Criticism and Critical Practice papers in both parts of the Tripos, as well as some of the optional papers offered in Part II of the English Tripos.

The 12-hour lectureship is a full-time position, and will require 12 hours of teaching per week during the 20 weeks of the undergraduate year. The starting salary will normally be on Step 7 of the College scale for 12-hour lecturers (£57,556 per annum).

Applicants should submit a CV, including details of publications and teaching experience, and should also ensure that three referees have uploaded references to the application system on their behalf before the deadline of noon (GMT) on Monday 5 January 2026.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit up to 10,000 words of their written work; such candidates will be notified on Friday 30 January 2026. The deadline for submission of the written work by shortlisted candidates will be noon on Friday 6 February 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews at Trinity College in person in the week commencing 16 February 2026, the exact date to be confirmed with the interview invitation.
