Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will work in our 24-bedded Critical Care department made up of 2 different areas - ICU and HDU, providing 24 hour care to level 2 and 3 patients. These will be a combination of medical and surgical critically ill patients.

They will be part of the Critical Care team. They will look after the patients within Critical Care, become proficient in placing invasive lines and review referrals from ED, theatres and the wards. They will be treated just like the training doctors, will have an educational supervisor, have an e-portfolio and attend/contribute to weekly teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will include providing critical care services across the Critical Care areas, leading the critical care junior doctor and ACCP team. This will include a full shift pattern. The average total number of hours each week will be 48 hours.

  • The post holder will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under care of the Consultants. He/she will refer to the Consultants when problems arise which are beyond his authority and/or experience.
  • The post holder must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty immediately before and after.
  • The post holder will participate in the duty rota with other middle and junior grade medical staff and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners in the Department.
  • The post holder will be required to actively participate in clinical audit and quality improvement and implement its results and relate these to the Trust and Directorate policies on Clinical Governance. Participation in the monthly morbidity and mortality process will also be encouraged.

Qualifications

Experience
  • Familiar with day to day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy DGH anaesthetic department
  • General training in Medicine to specialist level or equivalent
Skills
  • Willingness to participate in clinical research.
  • Practical experience with central venous cannulation under ultrasound guidance.
  • Practical experience with invasive procedures relevant to critical care medicine.
  • Trans-thoracic echocardiography experience is highly desirable.
