Cable Construction Manager England & Wales

Due to significant growth across our Transmission & Distribution Ltd business, we are looking for a new or experienced EHV Cables Construction Manager to support our expanding workload across underground cables (UGC). This is a site‑based position covering England and Wales. Flexible travel and relocation are required. Location flexibility and travel across England and Wales expected.

Role

Supporting the project manager, you will supervise and deliver key packages of cabling construction projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the production of construction plans and coordinating the Engineering support team.
  • Procurement of construction materials and specialist subcontracts to ensure successful delivery.
  • Managing sites and field‑based staff on cable or substation projects and underground cabling works.
  • Applying technical expertise in civil, cable and/or electrical aspects of projects.
  • Overseeing jointing and testing activities and ensuring compliance with distribution network operators’ requirements.
  • Leading core delivery teams and supporting the Site Manager & Project Manager.
  • Ensuring technical solutions on site meet Engineering requirements and management systems.
  • Coordinating street works permits and managing related timelines.
  • Managing customer relationships during tender and delivery, including decisions on change and expectations.
  • Driving safety initiatives and continuous improvement across SHESQ.
  • Cooperating in all health and safety matters to support Wood Transmission & Distribution Ltd’s legal duties.

Qualifications
  • Minimum qualification ISCED Level 5 (technical diploma/apprenticeship) or equivalent.
  • Experience managing sites and field staff on cable or substation projects and underground works.
  • Technical expertise in civil, cable and/or electrical aspects of cable projects.
  • Experience in cable installation, jointing and testing.
  • Prior work with distribution network operators.
  • Ability to meet project schedules and forecast resources and materials.
  • Experience managing sub‑contractors and recording measurement details for settlements.
  • Supervision of Engineering Support teams through project phases.
  • Coordination of team delivery while maintaining safety standards.
  • Experience with excavation works, both public highway and remote.
  • Knowledge of street works and local authority permit requirements.
  • Accredited safety training: SSSTS minimum, CSCS, IOSH or NEBOSH preferred.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Understanding of NEC3 Form of Contract.
  • Knowledge of New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA).
  • Familiarity with SMSTS training scheme.
  • Awareness of Scottish Southern Electricity (SSE) System authorisations.
