A leading UK engineering firm, known for delivering cutting-edge electrical and electronic systems to the global rail market, is seeking a Business Development Engineer to drive growth across Northern UK. The role involves building relationships with rail operators, maintenance teams, and engineering departments, supporting major fleet projects.

The successful candidate will combine technical expertise with commercial insight to identify opportunities, support maintenance programmes, and deliver tailored solutions for retrofits and new installations. Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a focused business development strategy targeting rail rolling stock and maintenance operations in Northern UK.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including engineering, maintenance, procurement, and project teams within major operators such as Train Operating Companies.
  • Provide technical support on the design, selection, and integration of electrical and electronic systems for new build and retrofit rail projects.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering and product development teams to ensure solutions meet customer requirements.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within maintenance frameworks, upgrade programmes, and system enhancements.
  • Maintain knowledge of the rail supply chain, procurement processes, compliance standards, and industry regulations.
  • Deliver technical presentations, proposals, and quotations to secure and retain business.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and customer insights to inform commercial strategy and product development.
Requirements
  • Experience in business development, technical sales, or applications engineering within the rail industry, preferably with a focus on rolling stock.
  • Strong technical understanding of electrical and electronic systems used in modern rail environments.
  • Knowledge of the rail supply chain, procurement cycles, and maintenance frameworks, especially within London Underground and Southern UK operators.
  • Ability to engage confidently with engineering and technical teams, interpret complex requirements, and present effective solutions.
  • Self-motivated and target-driven, capable of working independently in a field-based role.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to travel frequently across Northern UK.
  • A relevant technical qualification (HND or Degree) in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
