Ambulance Support Team Leader - East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust

We’re looking for a proactive and organised Team Leader to join our Ambulance Support Team. In this vital role, you’ll oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring vehicles meet infection prevention standards and supporting the team to deliver a high‑quality service. Responsibilities include supervising staff performance, managing workloads, conducting audits, and maintaining health and safety best practices. You’ll also liaise with key departments, handle stock control, and assist with major incident support when required.

Main duties of the job

As an Ambulance Support Team Leader, you will supervise and manage the day-to-day activities of the Ambulance Support Team, ensuring high standards of infection prevention and control.

Duties include overseeing staff performance and conduct, scheduling and prioritising workloads, conducting audits and appraisals, and maintaining health and safety practices.

You’ll also assist with vehicle deep cleaning, manage stock control, liaise with fleet and supplies teams, support major incident procedures, and ensure compliance with Trust policies and data protection requirements.

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities:

  • Supervises the attendance, performance and conduct of the team members in accordance with Trust policies. To carry out informal/formal discussions where necessary, referring to the Assistant Head of Fleet as appropriate.
  • Carries out Vehicle Deep Cleaning preparation duties alongside the team members on a rotating shift basis relative to locality and operational demand.
  • Responsible for carrying out assessments/audits in line with IPC compliance, and annual appraisals for staff within the Ambulance Support Team.
  • Monitors the deliveries of services, ensuring appropriate standards are maintained at all times, to a set infection control standard. Ensures that Trust vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and appropriate condition, reporting any defects or damage in accordance with the prescribed procedure / carry out minor vehicle maintenance.
  • Liaise directly with the Supplies Department regarding stock ordering and stock control. Also with fleet, control, crews and the Resource Manager regarding vehicle availability and Equipment Repairers regarding equipment repairs as and when required.
  • Monitors compliance with the Trust’s policies on the equipping and fuelling of vehicles, use of supplies etc. Compiles records on these as necessary and reports problems to the Line Manager.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of good health and safety practice at work, advising staff on policy and reporting any deficiencies to the appropriate manager. Including risk assessments when appropriate.
  • Provide support to major incident procedures as required for example equipment or supplies taken to the scene.
  • Assists in the monitoring and supervision of staff attendance in accordance with the Trust’s Procedure for Managing Sickness Absence.
  • To ensure that work is organised for the team members, including prioritising workload in line with organisational/divisional targets and priorities.
  • Manage workload, ensure a timely and quality service, deliver high standards of administration ensuring that work is planned and prioritised in accordance with organisational targets and key performance indicators.
  • Manage requests for annual leave and maintain annual leave records.
  • Assists in the investigation and collation of information regarding complaints concerning the Ambulance Support Team.
  • Assists in the selection of new staff and is responsible for their training, induction and development advising them on policies and practices within the service as necessary.
  • Maintains appropriate record systems to support the effective management of staff and resources. Ensures the security of patient and staff confidential information in line with data protection legislation.
  • Make recommendations for improvements in working practices where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuously improve own skills and competencies to ensure a high standard of supervision of the team.
  • Any other reasonable duties within the scope of this post which may be requested by the Assistant Fleet General Manager.
