Job summary

A regional health authority in the United Kingdom is seeking a Specialist Midwife to join their innovative WINGS team. This role focuses on empowering women with complex social needs by providing tailored, non-judgemental midwifery care. You will collaborate with multi-agency partners to support women's unique journeys to parenthood, enhancing outcomes for them and their families. The position requires a strong understanding of maternity services and excellent communication skills to foster trust with vulnerable clients.

Qualifications

  • Experience in staff training and safeguarding processes is an asset.

The WINGS Team are an innovative community based midwifery team in NHS Dumfries and Galloway, who provide tailored care and monitoring to pregnant women having additional complex social needs which may impact on their ability to parent. A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist midwife to join the WINGS team and provide non‑judgemental, individualised midwifery care for women who present with complex social needs. You will work in collaboration with families and multi‑agency partners to improve outcomes for the unborn, woman and her family. This is in line with the Scottish Government’s 5 year forward plan and initiative for maternity and neonatal services, ‘The Best Start’.

Responsibilities
  • Provide non‑judgemental, individualised midwifery care for women with complex social needs.
  • Collaborate with families, Social Services, Child Protection Advisors, Family Nurse Partnership and voluntary agencies such as Women’s Aid.
  • Support cover Mon‑Sun as part of the team.
  • Contribute to updating and implementation of relevant guidelines and policies.
  • Plan, assess, develop and implement programmes of care for this highly complex group of women.
  • Coordinate and provide training and guidance to staff on tailored care.
  • Assist with maternity safeguarding processes including screening of referrals.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Specialist midwife with experience working with women who have complex social needs.
  • Strong understanding of maternity and neonatal services and Scottish Government maternity initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and multi‑agency working skills.
  • Ability to develop trusting, enduring relationships with vulnerable women and families.
  • Experience in staff training and safeguarding processes is an asset.

Dumfries and Galloway provides a beautiful countryside setting with close transport links. Across the region, the maternity unit supports a birth rate of approximately 1100 babies a year.
