Are you an experienced Clinical Engineering professional ready to take the next step into a strategic, high impact leadership role? Do you thrive in complex technical environments where your decisions directly support patient safety and world class cancer treatment delivery?

Main duties of the job

Were looking for an exceptional leader to manage our Radiotherapy Technical Services team - a role where managerial responsibility, strategic oversight, and professional leadership are the primary focus, supported by strong technical understanding.

Our Radiotherapy service supports state of the art cancer treatment technologies including:

  • SABR, VMAT, IMRT and respiratory gated therapies.
  • Complex radiotherapy control, imaging and QA systems

The Radiotherapy Technical Services Manager ensures that:

  • The service runs safely, efficiently and in compliance with IRR17, IRMER and national standards
  • Highly specialised engineering teams perform to excellence
  • Clinical risks are mitigated and treatment can proceed without interruption
  • External engineers, contractors and suppliers meet Trust expectations
  • Data, reporting and quality systems are robust and audit ready
  • Strategic planning, device lifecycle management and procurement are professionally overseen

This is a key operational leadership role, central to patient pathways and Trust performance.

About us

Here at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, we are proud to provide expert, compassionate care for our local population. We are ranked as the third in the country for research, embedding education and training across the organisation. Our main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals on the south coast employing over 8,700 staff.

Our patients come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds because it makes our hospital stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for getting it right for patients, colleagues, and our community, you will find a home at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Job responsibilities

What you'll be doing

  • Leading and developing the Radiotherapy engineering team
  • Overseeing quality assurance, governance, audits and compliance

  • Liaising with senior clinicians and medical physics on service planning
  • Contributing to procurement, commissioning and major installation projects
  • Monitoring service risks and implementing improvement plans
  • Ensuring accurate technical records, databases and reporting
  • Representing the department in Trust-wide Health & Safety and regulatory forums

What you'll lead

You will manage a dedicated clinical engineering workforce responsible for approx:

  • 17,000+ maintenance and engineering jobs each year
  • £48 million in managed medical equipment assets
  • A team of highly skilled technicians and on occasion deputise when other leads of service are absent.

You will set competency standards, oversee training, conduct performance reviews, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide professional leadership across Radiotherapy engineering.

Were looking for someone who:

  • Has a strong background in Clinical Engineering, electronics or medical device technology
  • Understands the highly specialised environment of Radiotherapy equipment
  • Can confidently lead teams, manage performance, and set high technical standards
  • Communicates effectively with clinicians, physicists, external suppliers and senior stakeholders
  • Is capable of analysing risks, making decisive judgements and maintaining service continuity
  • Wants to contribute strategically to the future of Radiotherapy services

At PHU NHS Trust you'll join a forward thinking, supportive organisation where:

  • You'll work with cutting edge radiotherapy technology
  • You'll be part of a highly respected Clinical Engineering directorate

If you're an experienced Clinical Engineering professional looking for a leadership role where your strategic thinking, people management and technical expertise truly matter we want to hear from you.
