Job description

Help shape a world without scarring. The Scar Free Foundation funds pioneering medical research to transform lives. We’re seeking a qualified finance professional to join our Board as Honorary Treasurer, guiding strategy, risk, and financial sustainability.

The Scar Free Foundation’s mission is to achieve scar free healing within a generation. Our research brings together leading scientists, surgeons and psychologists to prevent and repair scarring, transforming lives in the UK and around the world.

As we enter our next phase of growth, strong financial leadership will be vital. The Honorary Treasurer will play a key role in ensuring the charity’s finances are well managed, our governance remains robust, and our ambitions are backed by sound strategy.

The Foundation has a strong record of prudent management and clear reporting. We now want a Treasurer who can help the Board interpret performance, assess financial risks and opportunities, and make confident strategic decisions. Working closely with the Chief Executive and Head of Finance & Operations, the Treasurer will help shape budgets, forecasts and investment decisions that balance ambition with long‑term sustainability.

This is not a hands‑on finance role but a strategic oversight position. The Treasurer will lead the Finance & Operations Committee, guide trustees through key financial issues, and ensure the Board fulfils its responsibilities under charity and company law.

Beyond the technical aspects, the Treasurer will be an active contributor to a small, collaborative Board, helping to strengthen governance and plan for future growth and leadership transitions. Their insight will help maintain the trust of funders, partners and donors — ensuring every pound we receive delivers maximum impact.

Ultimately, this role will help us fund more pioneering research and support more people living with scars. By ensuring the charity’s finances remain strong and transparent, the Treasurer will help bring us closer to a world where scars no longer limit lives.

What will you be doing?
  • Ensure the Board receives clear, accurate, and timely financial information.
  • Help set and monitor our reserves and investment policies.
  • Oversee the audit process and liaise with our external auditors.
  • Support the Head of Finance & Operations and Chief Executive on strategic financial planning and risk management.
  • Ensure the Board fulfils its legal responsibilities under charity and company law.
What are we looking for?
  • A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) or a senior finance professional with substantial experience in financial management, risk, or audit.
  • Comfortable analysing and explaining financial information, helping non‑financial trustees understand the key drivers behind the figures.
  • Strategic in outlook, with the ability to balance ambition and sustainability, ensuring resources are used effectively to achieve impact.
  • Experienced in governance, risk management, and compliance. Ideally familiar with charity or not‑for‑profit reporting standards.
  • Able to command confidence through your integrity, independence of thought, and commitment to good governance.
  • A collaborative communicator, willing to contribute beyond finance to wider board discussions and decisions.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience in investment or reserves management.
  • Understanding of charity accounting, SORP, and audit processes.
  • Familiarity with charity fundraising, grant management, or philanthropic partnerships.
  • Connections or networks that could help build the charity’s reach or influence.
  • Experience of board or committee leadership, ideally as a Chair or Treasurer elsewhere.
Personal Attributes
  • Clarity of judgement able to focus discussion on the key strategic and financial issues.
  • Curiosity and engagement willing to learn about our research and its real‑world impact.
  • Team spirit contributing constructively to a small, dedicated Board where every trustee plays an active role.

Time commitment: Four Board meetings and four Finance & Operations Committee meetings per year (weekday afternoons, London/hybrid), plus occasional engagement between meetings.
