Job description
📈 Who We Are:

We have built the new way for energy to be transacted.

tem exists to fix a creaking energy market. Today's wholesale system is stacked in favour of the few - a relic of the oil and gas era, riddled with markups and middlemen. We're changing that.

Our product, RED™, is built on a proprietary pricing engine that bypasses the wholesale market, enabling businesses to buy energy produced by renewable generators directly. That means clear, auditable transactions that ensure affordable bills and fair compensation - giving every business real ownership and control over where their energy comes from.

Since launching in 2021, we've saved UK businesses and generators over £25 million, powering a growing network of forward-thinking companies, from Pizza Pilgrims to Silverstone.

Backed by top-tier VCs including Atomico and Albion, we're creating a new category in energy - one that's decentralised, direct, and built on trust.

🏅 The Role:

We're looking for a Workflow Engineer to accelerate intelligent automation. You'll partner directly with Engine Owners to build the systems that automate operational work that sits outside Product / Engineering and human judgment.

You'll design and deploy automation across operational engines (such as Payments + Debt, or Tendering + Partner Activation), turning repetitive workflows into reliable systems. Be prepared to work as a flexible resource, shifting priorities based on where automation delivers the most operational impact. You'll build the foundation that enables tem to scale, giving our Ops team leverage to focus on high-value, high-nuance work.

As you develop deep domain expertise in your engines, there's a clear path to evolve into a combined Conductor/Workflow Engineer role - owning both the strategic direction and technical execution of an operational engine.

🚀 Responsibilities:
  • Build Operational Automation: Design and maintain the "Reasoning Layer" for our Engines. You aren't just moving data; you are building workflows that "think" and route tasks based on complex business logic.
  • Partner with Engine Owners: Work closely with the domain experts to understand business logic, translate manual processes into automation, and iterate quickly based on real-world operational feedback.
  • Integrate systems and tools: Connect internal platforms with third-party services using APIs, webhooks, and workflow automation tools.
  • Enable AI agents: Codify business rules, build reasoning layers, and create the data quality gates that allows AI agents to safely handle volume. You define the "Safety Valves" that know when to hand off to a human.
  • Own end-to-end delivery: Take problems from discovery through to production deployment, monitoring and iteration. You are a product manager for internal efficiency. You measure success by how many manual hours your systems eliminate each week.
  • Enable Team Upskilling: Create symbiotic learning opportunities by coaching operations team members in automation capabilities, helping them develop workflow engineering skills alongside their domain expertise.
🎯 Requirements:

Must-haves:

  • The Builder Mindset: 2–4 years in automation roles. You should have a portfolio of "Hours Reclaimed" - specific examples of where your code replaced manual labor.
  • API Polyglot: You should be comfortable with the "Messy Middle" - connecting systems that weren't designed to talk to each other.
  • Technical Toolkit: Deep experience with low code automation platforms (e.g., n8n) and an understanding of how to use AI/LLMs as part of a logic flow.
  • Systems Thinker: You don't just see a ticket; you see a flaw in the system. You can map a messy human process into a clean, logical architecture.
  • The "Rip and Replace" Speed: We value speed and impact over architectural perfection. You prefer shipping a "good" automation today over a "perfect" one next month.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience in high-growth startups or operations-heavy environments (fintech, energy, logistics, e-commerce)
  • Familiarity with AWS serverless architecture, proficiency in Python or JavaScript.
  • Exposure to building or integrating AI/LLM workflows
  • Background in data engineering or business intelligence
✨ Benefits & Perks:
  • Competitive salary - our current band for this role is £50,000 – £70,000 depending on experience
    • We review salaries twice a year using real-time market data, with transparent, consistent pay for the same role and level.
  • Stock Options - everyone on the team has ownership in our mission.
  • 25 days holiday + public holidays - Swap public holidays for ones that matter most to you. Plus, get an extra day off for your birthday 🎉.
  • Remote & flexible working - We're fully remote with clear core hours, and no internal meetings on Friday afternoons.
  • Home working & wellbeing budgets:
    • Up to £1,200 / €1,200 annually to upgrade your remote setup (co‑working passes, equipment, etc.).
    • Up to £150 / €150 monthly on anything that supports your wellbeing - from therapy to gym memberships to meditation apps.
🗣️ Interview Process:

Our processes normally take around 2-3 weeks from first call to offer – please let us know about any adjustments to timelines that may be required.

  1. First call with our Talent Team (30 Mins). This is to understand your experience, motivations, and discuss the role in more detail.
  2. Behaviour Interview with the Hiring Manager (60 Mins). This is your chance to really understand the role, the expectations, and ensure alignment on ways of working.
  3. Technical Interview with Ops & Product Team (60‑90 Mins). You'll work through a real operational workflow problem, discussing how you'd approach automation and integration challenges.
  4. Culture‑Add Interview with Stakeholders (45 Mins). The final session will be with two cross‑functional stakeholders, and will explore how your values align with ours, and is designed to be a genuine two‑way conversation, your chance to understand what it's really like to work at tem.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities, including those that are traditionally underrepresented in the tech and energy sectors. If you’re excited about this role but not sure you meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you. Your unique perspective could be exactly what we’re looking for.
