Postdoctoral Research Associate: Medical Statistics in Cancer Detection

About the Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Cancer Early Diagnosis Unit where they will undertake research focussed on improving understanding of cancer risk and developing novel models and tools to improve cancer early detection. They will contribute to Cancer Research UK and NIHR funded projects, including studies using large healthcare datasets, such as CPRD, focussed on improving prostate cancer, lung cancer and upper gastro-intestinal cancer detection. In addition to leading their own project, the successful candidate will supervise more junior researchers in the statistical analysis of data. They will be supported by a multidisciplinary internationally renowned team with diverse expertise including in health data science, epidemiology, risk prediction, AI and clinical practice. They will also be supported to develop their career and build grant or fellowship applications.

About You

Candidates must have a PhD (or close to completion) or research qualification/experience equivalent to PhD level in health data science or similar field. Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, in medical statistics and in the analysis of large healthcare datasets (such as CPRD, QResearch, NCRAS or HES) is essential for this role.

The Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH) is an exciting and dynamic environment, home to more than 450 staff, 100 PhD students and c500 postgraduate taught students. It harnesses expertise across a wide range of population-based research and education activities and aims to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in population health, primary care and preventive medicine. The Institute is organised into six separate research centres which, though complementary and following the Institute strategic plan, also have Centre-specific objectives and requirements.

The Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis (CCSPED) forms part of the WIPH and brings together globally leading researchers focusing on cancer prevention, cancer screening and detection and early diagnosis across three units, including the CRUK-funded Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU, Director - Sasieni). CCSPED also hosts the cross-cutting Cancer Behavioural Science group.
