Job description

This is an opportunity to be part of our North Berwick café team who are committed to providing customers with a high-quality, person-centred, and safe catering service.

Volunteering alongside our chef, you will be involved in the preparation of food and drink, including sandwiches, salads, paninis, soup, scones, and cakes, and will contribute to the operation & cleanliness of the catering area.

Hospice staff and volunteers are expected to reflect our Hospice Values in the way they carry out their roles, and in their interactions with each other and with patients, family members, and any other visitors.

What will I be doing/involved in?

General duties will involve preparing food and keeping the catering areas clean & tidy.

  • Support in the preparation of sandwiches, paninis, soup, scones, cakes, and beverages.
  • Comply with food hygiene regulations regarding food preparation and cleaning in the kitchen.
  • Maintain high personal hygiene standards.
  • Comply with Health and Safety regulations.
  • Adhere to manual handling/risk assessment/fire safety training.
  • Participate as a team member.
  • Store goods correctly and use stock on a rotational basis.
  • Top up all cleaning materials in the work area as required.
  • Appropriate disposal of waste through the correct waste stream and bins.
  • Report faulty equipment and hazards to the kitchen manager or café manager.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Enthusiastic and well-motivated.
  • Open to change and new ideas – willing to learn.
  • Able to follow instructions and use own initiative.

Time commitment and duration:

One morning or afternoon each week. The role will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

Where will I be based?

The café manager and the catering manager will be supporting you.

Recruitment checks:

  • Interview with café manager and Volunteer Services manager.
  • Application Form.
  • Two references.

Training:

  • Hospice Orientation.
  • Team/role induction and training, including Allergens and Food Hygiene Training.
  • Team meetings (if/as necessary).

Additional information:

Volunteers may claim reasonable travelling expenses for transport to and from the café. Please speak to your manager about this.

The café provides complimentary tea and coffee to all volunteers whilst you are on shift.

If you volunteer for a full day at the café, you can claim a free meal from the café. Please speak to your manager about this.
