V05146 - Advanced Apprentice Engineering Technical - Design

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world‑class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state‑of‑the‑art vessels.

Training course: Engineering Design Technician (Level 3). Hours: 37 hours a week, shifts to be confirmed. Duration: 3 years 6 months.

What you’ll do at work
  • Study towards a Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering qualification.
  • After the first year, receive a badge as either an Electrical, Mechanical or Hull & Outfit designer.
  • Complete around five placements within the business, working with Designer teams on one of our Submarine programmes (Astute, Dreadnought and SSN AUKUS). Tasks include creating models and outputs using the relevant CAD software (CADDS5, FORAN or Siemens NX).
  • Learn and develop teamwork, communication, sustainability and health & safety skills.
  • Work towards completion of a Level 3 End‑Point Assessment as an Engineering Design Technician.

Training
  • Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Work in accordance with the design process, company management systems, policies and procedures.
  • Review and interpret technical information and requirements from different sources such as specifications, engineering drawings and stakeholder input.
  • Identify and assess factors that affect designs such as materials, application, location, risk and environment.
  • Select materials and parts.
  • Propose and evaluate sustainable engineering concepts to solve engineering challenges.
  • Develop solutions that can be manufactured or built, and proven, operated and maintained during their operational life and decommissioned or recycled at the end of their operational life.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures to engineering drawings or models, including own designs and those of peers.
  • Communicate with others verbally and in writing for example with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Produce written documents, schedules and reports.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks with consideration for cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
  • Identify inaccuracies or discrepancies in drawings and specifications and propose solutions.
  • Incorporate changes to an existing design as a result of any modifications made during the as‑built implementation.
  • Create concepts for system layouts and associated components.
  • Read, interpret and establish design intent.
  • Determine the correct tolerances for components of the design.
  • Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
  • Perform simple calculations to use in design drawings.
  • Use measuring techniques for reverse engineering.
  • Use digital tools such as CAD and BIM to produce design project deliverables in the areas of electrical power, control and instrumentation, mechanical, piping and structural design.
  • At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

  • GCSE in Maths, English & Science or Technical (grade A*–C or 9–4 or equivalent).
  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
